Can my PSU handle this?

Recommended Posts

I have an Antec TP-650 which is at 650W (obviously) and I wonder if it can handle all of these:

Intel Core i5 760 @ 4GHz (aiming for 20x200 at something like 1.3 vcore?)

Asus P7P55D-E PRO motherboard

Corsair Dominator 2x2GB DDR3-1600 at 7-8-7-20 1T 1.65V

Prolimatech Megahelems Rev. B with 1 Zalman ZM-F3BL

Antec Nine Hundred Two case with all fans on low

2x Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB's clocked at 850/1000 each in SLI

2 DVD drives

1 WD Caviar Green 1TB

1 WD Caviar Black 640GB

The PSU has been used since August 2009 and according to the Antec PSU calculator the capacitors will age or something in this time and won't be as effective as it was when it was bought.

Should I upgrade or will it be fine?

You're 460's are typically about 450w each.

I could be wrong :O

Only by a small amount.

1Gb GTX 460's are are between 280 and 320 watts depending on model and overclocking etc so your 650watt is probably going to struggle. I agree with Dariuas though and would look to a good quality 850 Watt PSU. I myself prefer Seasonic or Corsair but any decent name brand PSU that is at least 80 plus bronze or better will be fine.

i ran twin 5850s oc;d on my corsair 650watter

wattage isnt everything.. its the amps on the right rail...

1000 watts on a 5v rail is useless while 1000watts on a 12v rail is everything

Hmmm I don't understand any of this 12V business. Well here is the link for the webpage on the Antec TP-650. How good is this 12V rail?

By the way I'm looking at the Corsair HX850 if I absolutely have to upgrade, but really don't want to spend any more money on my build after spending so much on the i5, Megahelems, the motherboard, and the other 460 (well its a lot for me. I'm just a schoolboy lol)

Antec PSU calculator say approx 673 watts needed for your spec, 20% capacitor aging and no overclocking on your GPU's.

Nothing wrong with your particular PSU, but even assuming the capacitors are just as efficient as when new, it will still be very tight. Really its not a good idea to run it at max limits all of the time. Best to look at a 750 or 850 watter IMO.

Where are all these figures coming from for power consumption? A quick look at a few reviews shows a total power consumption of somewhere between 450~500W maximum for SLI'ed GTX 460 1GB on powerful i7 systems. Real world figures for games like Crysis are more like 400W total. Taking into account the fact that these figures are AC power draw the actual DC load will be about 80% of the figures given then I see no reason why the Antec TP 650W shouldn't be up to the job with room to spare.

I'm running that corsair atm and it runs beautifully :-) showing no signs of stress.. Barely even gets warm when I'm folding or benching with my 580 overclocked as far as it goes and unrestricted chewing more power than those 460s sli'd ever could hahahha

And Pauls right... No reason it can't run those cards

Sweet. Guess I don't need to upgrade!

I'm folding on the rig in my sig and pulling no more than 270W from the mains. I think that's pretty sweet for 18~22K PPD!

No you don't. ;)
