Seagate Barracuda Drive ST2000DM001

Hi everyone,

I've just bought a new 2TB Seageate HDD (ST2000DM001) to replace my aging 250GB drive I currently have.

What I want to ask is whether the performance between 7200.8 and 7200.14 is particularly great, and if I will notice it during boot, and if anybody has any experience with these drives, or similar (7200.14 and 64MB cache) so I know what to expect.

Cheers guys :)

7200.14 are the latest drives from Seagate. You can't expect performance like SSD from a mechanical drive, but they are good enough  at least the reviews say so.

And I don't have 7200.14 So I can't give you any kind of first hand experience form my end.

I recieved the drive today, and I'll run some before and after benchmarks (2 runs of CrystalDiskMark 2000MB). The tests will be run on a AMD 970 chipset using SATA 6GBPS connections.

I'll just let you see the results for yourself Fred. I was with you on this one, I didn't expect to see such a drastic change as can be seen in the benchmarks at all.

Looks like there is a lot of benefit to be gained from using 7200.14 over 7200.8. :D

Looking through an SSD benchmark thread here (I don't think we have one), it looks like the sequential write speed on the HDD is faster than many (single) SSDs.

My old hard disk is going into a new system build with similar specs to the current one (same motherboard and processor), so I'll run a benchmark when the parts arrive and post them up here if you want :)
