HELP! Need router that DOESN'T require port forwarding

Like the name of the thread suggestions I am looking for a decent router that does not require port forwarding to play certain games.

 

The one I have now (Technicolor TG587n v3) is a complete heap and has given me nothing but trouble playing certain games on PC. None of the guides, video tutorials or port forwarding programs I have tried(and there have been A LOT) have helped even in the slightest.

I have poured over a week into trying to fix this issue and I am now convinced it is my POS router which I luckily got for free.

 

So, my questions is. Are there any routers out there designed specifically around gaming and ADSL that DON'T need the time wasting and resource burning port forwarding?

Are you hosting game servers which you want others to connect to?

 

I have yet to come across a game which requires port forwarding for you to play it.

 

If you are not trying to host a server, I think you have misunderstood port forwarding.

 

Basically, your router has an internet IP address. This uniquely identifies it on the internet.

If somebody wants to contact your computer from the internet (ie. connect to your game sever) they will try to connect to your IP on a specific port number.

Your router will then have a rule that says if connection attempt is made on port XXX send this to the INTERNAL IP address of a computer.

 

 

When playing a game as a client, there is NO NEED for port forwarding.

 

 

In short, if you want no port forwarding, you need to loose the router altogether. There is no way to avoid this by the very nature of a router.

Basically, get an ADSL modem. This way your computer is sitting directly on the internet.

However, this WILL open you to a whole host of attacks. And I would recommend you get a very good software firwall in place.

This solution would also mean no other computer can connect to the internet. Unless you connection share through your computer.

 

 

I think it may be best if you list the games you are trying to play, and what is not working. Also, where did you read you need to port forward. IF you really do need to port foward, are you sure you have done it correctly?

I've had Netgear, Linsys and now a DLink DGL-4500 routers and I have NEVER had to forward ports to simply play a game....ever

Agreed. Ports don't need opened for the vast majority of games unless you're hosting servers.

Which games specifically? The only one i've encountered recently that needed ports opened was Splinter Cell Conviction.

Basically modern warfare 3s NAT won't change for anything than strict so I can't host or join co-op spec ops. I can't see servers to join for counter strike or killing floor. I can still play eve and join MC servers fine though. I haven't had this issue with previous routers. I have read that a lot of people have resorted to DMZ to resolve their issues, but I am really not comfortable with that.

 

Can anyone recommend a good gaming router?

 

I was after a DLink DGL-4500, but stupid amazon insists it can't ship any of the 20 it has to Australia becuase they are a bunch of lazy C@S that don't like writing big addresses on their packages

Well If you want to host in any sort of way, you will have I do port forwarding unless you remove the router completely . I have a netgear and it's the best iv owned in years. I has bad luck with d-link ( only had 2 and they both barely worked) .

It sounds like you want automatic port forwarding. My router supports it for games that support it. Cisco E1000 with DD-WRT.

Make your computer the DMZ... though that would open up a whole new can of worms. But port forwarding really shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe it's just the experience with your existing router that turned you off. It's quite easy to do on all the Linksys and D-Link I've had experiences with, not to mention Tomato/DD-WRT which is a breeze.
