I just bought a XFX R9 280X and I need to remove and sweep the old Nvidia drivers.  I was looking into Driver Fusion,

but I'm seeing a bunch of negative reviews about adware and worms.  Where should I download this from?  How can I

avoid the unwanted programs and what should I look out for when I'm downloading it?  Is it necessary to get the paid version,

or can I get by with the free version?  Also, are there any good alternatives?

Download it from Guru3d. You could also try Driversweeper or ddu.

Driversweeper (older version of driver fusion is so much better....I don't like the direction it took)

I use the latest Driver Fusion all the time (free version). I have no issues. The UI changes constantly, which is a drag. It does a decent job of deleting AMD and/or NVIDIA folder contents, but not always. I should do a test sometime to see how good of a job it actually does. It always leaves the container folders and registry trees, though.

No, it only gets rid of unused registry items. For example, you have a registry file (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AMD\Install) that is pathed to "C:\Program Files\AMD\Install", if you delete the path "C:\Program Files\AMD\Install", CCleaner will find that the registry item no longer has a path, so will say it's okay to delete the registry file within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AMD\Install, but it won't get rid of the registry tree "...\Install", just the registry files contained within "...\Install".

 

So, there is a chance that there are leftover registry files using CCleaner. Even if you deleted the folder associated with it. I'll know for sure when I test it out. I use Driver Fusion with CCleaner after every AMD/NVIDIA driver uninstall, but also delete the paths and registry trees just to make sure.
