jdm_freek Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 so i was thinking....... i was made an offer $200 for my fx 8350 and msi 970 gaming motherboard and i would replacing with an msi z97 gd65 and g3258 for $195 or spend the extra $140 for a 4690k should i keep my rig as is or change????? SpikeSoprano Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 If it is capable of doing what you want of it with no problem why would you want to change it ? But if your not satisfied with it imho go with the 4690k, as I can't see the 3258 being an upgrade except maybe using less power to run it. jdm_freek Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I would only get the G 3258as a stepping stone to something more powerful like aA i7 Plus from what I read the G 3258 overclocked quite nicely
IVIYTH0S Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 (edited) Weigh your options, though if you're thinking of ending at the i5, why not just get it now...as whatever savings you'd net from waiting would probably be negated by the fact that you'd have to get the pentium too Edited December 1, 2014 by IVIYTH0S
WarWeeny Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'd go for the 4690k.
cchalogamer Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I think it's a solid offer on the old parts, and the pentium idea isn't a terrible one as there IS a market out there for them (more so if you do get a good overclocker). Just be sure to dump it for what you really want before 1150 dies off. With that said if you have a microcenter/frys/etc that does CPU deals near by or if Newegg/tigerdirect still has the 4690K for $209 w/$10 gift card that is probably the best option. Also keep in mind the G3258 doesn't seem to be on sale much of anywhere at the moment and $70 takes a hit in the value proposition compared to the $60 or less they've been running. jdm_freek Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 (edited) oh and I forgot if you check out with visa at Newegg you get a $25 off so I will most likely go with the 4690K and it's just I'm really starting to miss my 2600k it was such a good processor Edited December 1, 2014 by jdm_freek
ccokeman Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 The right 2600K was a beast.
El_Capitan Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 The right 2600K was a beast. I loved Sandy and Ivy, not so much with Haswell or Devil's Canyon.

El_Capitan Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 (edited) I don't usually see good overclocking 2600K's or 2700K's less than $200, but someone is selling one for $185: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1843023&highlight=2600k 3770K's are usually more, and there's a reason I've not gotten a 4770K or 4790K. You have to be really lucky to get to 4.6GHz, especially at 24/7 voltages, with a great cooling solution. Usually respectable voltages with good cooling is around 4.4GHz. However, delidded 3770K's can go 4.8GHz - 5.0GHz on average, with respectable voltages, and handled with decent cooling. http://www.overclock.net/t/1525990/for-sale-3770k-delidded-gigabyte-up7-z77x-motherboard-w-waterblock I have seen 3570K's for $150, but they go really quick. If you can find some, can't beat that performance for the price. Remember to keep in mind that Haswell/Devil's Canyon will be roughly 200MHz faster than Ivy, and Ivy will be roughly 200MHz faster than Sandy at the same core frequencies. For example, Haswell/Devil's Canyon @ 4.4GHz = Ivy @ 4.6GHz = Sandy @ 4.8GHz Also, the big mantra with Haswell/Devil's Canyon is that CPU Overclock is King. That means that's your main goal. If you also want great memory overclocks with great cpu overclocking, forget about it. Samsung Wonder RAM is useless with Haswell/Devil's Canyon. I can get a 3770K to 5.1GHz and 2400MHz memory, but a 4770K/4790K, I'd have to keep the memory at 1600MHz with whatever CPU overclocks I can get.
