  1. While reformatting and reinstalling windows, instead of encountering Windows' boot up screen when first trying to install, I got a blue BIOS error that stated that "if this was the first time I had seen this error, don't worry. If not, then my motherboard may not be ACPI compliant." Now, I haven't seen the message again in the last half hour of restarts and installs, but in the event that I do, what does that mean, exactly? The motherboard was only bought last year or so, so ACPI errors (I assume) would be indicative of problems. Basic stats: Windows XP Pro, SP2 - Motherboard's a Foxconn socket 775 model, but I don't know the exact ID for it at the moment (don't know where the manual is)
  2. I don't know if drivers are it. From what I understand, USB 2.0 drivers are build in with Windows XP after SP1. The computer's fully updated plus (correct) drivers from alienware - which didn't include any special USB drivers. If it's a driver thing, I'm stumped.
  3. I've got a little bit of a puzzling situation on my hands. My boyfriend's got an alienware laptop, a few years old (can't remember the line) and fairly recently the USB ports stopped functioning properly. They are USB 2.0 ports, yet they will only operate at USB 1.0 speed. Even windows, when a device like an external HD or a flash drive is put it, gives the "this would go faster if you put this device in a USB 2.0 port" error message. Also, when prompted to 'find if you have any USB 2.0 ports on your computer', none register out of 4 ports. So, originally, I thought this was a software problem, and he reformatted-reinstalled. No luck, same error. Haven't gotten a chance to try a linux liveCD, but I have a feeling this is something-on-the-motherboard related. Anyone have any ideas or similar problems? also, we've looked in the BIOS and windows for any power-saving option that might've been on and hampering the USB speed.
  4. Hey guys. During the latest stream of windows updates, I shut down a machine and decided to install the updates then. Consequently, the machine has been stuck on the second update (out of eight) for the past hour. It doesn't seem frozen (the text still scrolls and it says "DO NOT SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER") but it will not proceed to the next one. I'm tempted to hard boot the machine, but I'm worried it will screw something up. I also am worried that something is wrong with my machine to make it do this. Any ideas?
  5. Thanks for the recommendations, but why exactly, if you guys know, are the Core 2 duos so much better?
  6. I was looking at an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+. Great reviews, heard its fast (though not so sure about gaming with it) but I was wondering when the clock speed is listed as 3.0 ghz, is that the speed of both cores individually or the speed of both cores combined? I'm perplexed by the huge price difference between the X2 and it's 3.0ghz, single core, FX cousin. Also, intel advertises its dual core processors by per-core-speed... Can anyone clear this up for me? Boneheaded question, but I'd like to be sure.
  7. And oold, ooold IBM. When I was moving it out to take a picture of it, the heatsink for the Pentium I processor.. well, fell/snapped off. I dare say, the fishtank case is hard to beat.
  8. Thanks a lot, guys. I don't have the computer here in front of me now, but I'll keep all these things in mind. If anyone else has more suggestions, they're welcome.
  9. Hello there, Just another bonehead question. I've been trying to figure out what's up with this machine's memory - It's got 3 GB worth in it, yet windows, Everest, etc only display 2816 MB of it in the machine. Could this be defective memory or could it be, like I've read before, Windows or the video card 'stealing' memory for use? Any suggestions as to what this could be and where the missing 256 MB is?
  10. True for some stuff. But I suppose it's worth the shipping if you can't get it locally, if you order through them it's even more expensive.
  11. Well, it depends on how fast you want it shipped. If you get two-day air.. yeah, chances are it'll be more than your case is worth. Wanna wait two weeks? No problemo, usually.
  12. Well, as far as ruggedness is concerned, I'm just looking for shipping survivability and resistance against various corrosion forces. I live right on the water and the salt does a number on my computer parts. I'm looking to make this rig not only powerful, but heavily guarded against salt and dust. A processor that is one of the first things to go down from a stalactite inside your case isn't good. (not that I'd let that happen, but you know what I mean!)
  13. All right. To start off, I've had better experiences with Intel and more time with those processors than AMD. However, with Intel's prices and lack of 64 bit compatability, I'm wanting to build a "l33t rig" with AMD. But alas, my knowledge is limited - however, I've got a few processor choices in mind. Price doesn't matter that much as there's always decent deals somewhere on the internet (even though the shipping here in hawaii is horrible) What I was planning to go with was a AMD 64 4000, but the same motherboards that can handle that also handle semprons and the FX line (which, while pretty, cost a pretty penny to get). What are your guys' preferred processors for (mainly) gaming, based on speed, overclockability without problems, and ruggedness? The X2 processors are a whole 'nother story. I'm shying away from those as the only motherboards I can seem to find that support them don't suit my needs as far as video/other hardware goes, and not much of what I use needs that second core. So, count them out unless there's something I'm missing that makes up for the lack of everything else. From what I read they also aren't worth their money if you're primarily gaming. Forgive me if I anger the AMD gods here, just lookin' for personal opinion and experience as I venture over to the other side of the board.
