  1. Thought I would throw my hat in the ring if not too late... Intel i7 3930K MB - Asus P9X79 Deluxe 32 GB G. Skill Ripjaws Z DDR3-1600 EVGA GTX 680 - 4GB Graphics card Pyro SE 120GB SSD 2x Samsung 1TB 7200 rpm HDD Antec Pro 1200 PSU XSPC Raystorm EX360/D5 pump cooler Asus DVD burner 1x Dell 21" monitor CoolerMaster Haf X 932 United States PS - This rig is sitting in a pile as I am in the process of putting it together... and the monitor is lame, but what I have right now :-)
  2. Sorry, I wasn't clear. Gaming will only be done on one monitor. I want the second monitor for when I am using the system for work that I am doing. I hate bouncing around on one monitor.
  3. I know one game is BF3 and another is Dirt 3, I believe. I haven't really given the monitors and resolution a lot of thought. I think I am behind the curve on what is out there. I would like two monitors at a minimum, with three at the most, but two to start. I am looking for 24" monitors. I am about 3 weeks from finalizing the parts for this, but have grabbed a few things that Newegg had great deals on. I am digging through MBs and graphics cards. I do keep coming back to the 680, but maybe because it is new...
  4. I know Somerville as I grew up in NY, worked in Pughkeepsie for 5 years. Looks like we headed to opposite sides of the country! Still a Yankees fan, however. lol I have the kids rooting through your blog and this site on a daily basis as I want them to do the research and I will follow along as I know mostly where this build is heading.
  5. The first thing I want to do is thank everyone for the info and help with dialing this build in. Once again OCC comes through with flying colors. I appreciate the info on the graphics cards , especially the 7970 info and the WC systems. I think, since the kids are building this, I will stay away from the plumbing side of things on this build. I want them to do the work and self-contained is probably the safer way to go and dad's wallet goes far, but not too far ;-). They are pushing to make this a gaming build, but the 7970 looks like it may be the better all-around card, although, based on their comments last night, I am not sure how much time I am going to get on this! I did find Newegg has some pretty good deals today on the G Skill 32GB memory and the Pyro SE SSD is at a great price point today. Those are on order right now, so that takes care of that. I have some more work to do on picking the graphics card, so that is on tap for the weekend. I am a bit unsure at this time about the Motherboard. I appreciate the comments so far, but is there something that I am missing and maybe have overlooked on the MB's that are available outside of the two I put up in my original post. I am open to more thoughts on that if you all are willing. Again, thanks for the input and look forward to further thougths. Also, thanks El_Capitan for your blog.
  6. Hi all, Looking for a little advice or critiques on a gaming and intensive graphic build (some video editing and CAD). CPU: I7 3930K Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 OR ASRock X79 Extreme6/GB LGA 2011 Cooler: Noctua DH-14 SE2011 or liquid cooler (Brand/Model?), unsure of at this point. RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) OR G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Do I really need 32GB? HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s - Owned x2 SSD: Patriot Pyro SE PPSE120GS25SSDR 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX1200 - Own it already Case: CM HAF 932 GPU: ASUS GTX680-2GD5 GeForce GTX 680 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP - Or another manufacturer, but which? Basically this is going to be a build that my two boys are going to attempt with Dad footing the bill, lol. I am an electrical engineer who is a weekend geek, but haven't really attempted a build of this sort (I've done some overclocking, but not to the level of you all). The kids are doing all the research with me pointing the way, they are 8 and 15. I just need to be a few steps ahead of them right now. The main focus is gaming, CAD drawings, some video and getting into the wonderful world of OC'ing. I had received some good advice previously from peeps on this site and figured you may be able to point out something that I am missing or help me solidify the hardware for this build. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
  7. I have the time to spare, so I will look into the Radeon 69xx series (whenever that comes out, hopefull soon) and the GTX 580. The only real need that I have is to be able to run 4 monitors when I am not gaming. I really liked the XFX EyeFinity as well. I will head to the 3x4GB Mushkin frostbyte mem, so I think that may help with the NH-D14 size. That seems to be the non water cooler of choice, now that I am looking at it. Plus, it is about $30 cheaper too. I am picking up the parts and pieces as I go and when I see a good deal, sale, MIR, etc. The I7 950 for $200 looks like a great deal and that is next on the list. Seems like I have seen Mushkin 3x4gb blackline for around $200 as well, but I can't seem to find the website I was on. Everyone has given me new avenues to explore and I thank you all for that. I thought I may have gotten lost in the Turkey day shuffle as no one replied until today and now I have all of this homework.! lol
  8. Thanks everyone for the comments. I have been doing more digging and think the I7 950 may give me pretty good bang for the buck and save me about $600- 700 in the process. I am buying this piecemeal as deals come up and found the I7 950 for $200 at microcenter and am going to see if my brother will wander down and get it for me. I really appreciate the comments on the H70 and the memory. I was thinking about the NH-D14. I think I may bag the SSD RAID 0 and stick with one. I have been stuck on the Radeon and didn't really give NVIDIA a thought, but I like the sound of it. I did like the Eyefinity on the XFX card, but I assume that I can get something like that from NVIDIA possibly. I am an electrical engineer so I like power, hence the 1200... lol. Well, I am going back to the drawing board and re-thinking some of the items I have on my list and will keep you all updated. Photos too when I get moving forward with everything. Thanks again, tdk
  9. Been a while since I put something together and would like some help/critiques on what I have so far. This is where I am heading. I use a graphics heavy modeling program and mess around with a bunch of different games. Also, I am looking at hooking up 4 monitors in the 22 inch size. Intel CPU - Is 980X worth it or should I look at something else in their line? ASUS Rampage III Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CORSAIR Professional Series AX1200 1200W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 SLI Certified 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive (x2) Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 CORSAIR Hydro H70 CWCH70 120mm High Performance CPU Cooler Graphics Cards - xxxx I guess it boils down to these questions: CPU - xxx Crucial SSD - Should I downgrade to a 128GB and use one or two? These will be OS, probably set up RAID 0? Graphics card - XFX 5970 Black Edition, I like what I have read on these cards??? Critiques on what I have so. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any thought, comments, etc.
