New Modem/Router needed

I have been looking for a list of reliable machines on the internet. I use wired ADSL2+

I have found a lot of reviews but no long term reliability lists.

User reviews range from "excellent" to "wont work" for the same machines.

I only found one comparison.

Is this typical of Modem/Routers?

I hear modem/routers aren't that great of investment because they aren't typically of as high a quality of dedicated units and when they're separate it can make troubleshooting far easier when small manageable problems do arise.

Thanks Ivy, can you suggest what units to research please. I know that America has a lot more stuff than Australia, so some of your suggestions may be not available, but I have always liked D-Link.

Our Dlink DIR655 was a great unit for a while but when we replaced it with an Asus rt-n65u (seems really nice and has been good so far), I took it (the Dlink) to my job and it's been slowly dying there. I've deduced that its Wireless N radio is dying or has died completely. It works fine but slowly on Wireless G.

I'm really liking my Netgear R6200 right now though, it was $75 and a guest at my hotel bought my old Dlink to leave at work for $60 so it was the best deal ever.

Thanks.

I have another ask of you.

My system is onboard nic to modem/router to filter/splitter (for phone connection) then to the telco wall socket.

I have no other computers/items in the lineup for internet connectiom.

Do I need a moem/router?

Do I need only a modem?

Does a modem have a built in firewall?

A few questions there but important at the moment.

I can't find modems on the internet. Nearly everything is modem/router with wireless.

Here are two TP-link modem/routers! See what you think please?

TD-W8960N for $42

TD-W8968   for $48

Doesn't  your internet provider supply a modem with their service, if not and you only use 1 pc you probably don't need one . A router just gives you a way to connect to more than 1 pc.

Supply your own modem makes the deal cheaper.

This will be the third modem I need.

One question answered anyway. But those TP_links are a lot cheaper than the one modem I found advertised in Australia. Good buy????

Bit hard to pass up that one.

When I get a couple dollars (Soon I hope) that will be a good buy. It says 24Mbps which is twice the borrowed NetComm NB6Plus 4.

I have decided also on an SSD and a 1T HDD from the same supplier.

I'll get them all at Chistmas. Children helping the old man here. Hehe!

The freight is nearly 20 dollars so better to get one package.

You two have been most helpful and I am most appreciative. Thank you heaps.
