  1. Watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes last night, at least it had good special effects
  2. Another vote for Noctua, running a pair of PF-12's on my Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 that are still plugging along. Quality product that lives up to expectations.
  3. The ASUS P8Z68-V LE is a decent board aside from a couple of issues. The back panel I/O cover plate is really cheap and getting the motherboard to mate correctly is a bit of pain; then for some reason the audio header has been placed in the back middle part of the board. It's also not a full ATX form factor, it's not as wide and you don't utilize the three standoffs towards the front of the case. However, the USB 3.0 is a big plus and the UEFI bios is really nice. Overclocking is a breeze, all I had to do was enable XMP then bump the CPU multi to 40 then set power management back on to maximum. This yielded a rock solid 4.0GHz overclock when under load with very decent temperatures, when idling cpu drops to 1.6GHz and temps are in the 28~31C range using a Zalman 7500 (the boss picked it). Think the CM Hyper 212 Plus should provide comparable results. I've been bouncing back and forth between ASUS and Gigabyte but like you I trust ASUS just a bit more.
  4. I'm in the process of doing a very similar build for my boss, longevity is also one of the key criteria. Think the K series is a good move, non K have the HD2000 graphics and the difference in cost is minimal. Also using a Corsair 650 (HX) power supply and have had good luck with Corsair for years. Went with an ASUS P8Z68-V LE but have always had pretty luck with Gigabyte too. Looks pretty solid to me.
  5. I have both OCZ and Intel drives, with be sticking with Intel going forward.
  6. You can use an HDMI to DVI cable for those monitors that only have DVI input, it's the same video signal.
  7. I'm in the several times per week mainly due to playing with the Bios or installing some kind of software updates.
  8. I would include Intel in the list for quality even though their drives are a bit pricy. The SSD toolbox is definitely a plus.
  9. When building for customers or friends I recommend going with bang for the buck which today is the 2500K; for those that prefer AMD I'm still recommending the Phenom X6 1100T so the range would be anywhere from $180 to $225 depending on what deals are available. For my own builds I have a tendency to spend more (than I should) but did make it through Black Friday without doing anything irrational
  10. Totally agree, upgraded from a Phenom X6 1100T and couldn't really believe the initial benchmark results. It does take a fairly massive overclock to pull ahead of the X6.
  11. Am looking forward to seeing some benchmarks on the Radeon HD7970XT. Passed on the 6000 series but might make the jump to the 7970 if the numbers look good.
  12. Will be interested to hear how this works out for you. Have been considering a new Intel build and the ASRock Z68 PROFESSIONAL GEN3 and ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 are two of the boards I've been looking at. Have used ASUS and Gigabyte over the years but ASRock seems to be getting good reviews and I especially like the slot layout on these two boards.
  13. Thanks boiknker. I also have an Intel X58 system with a 965EE, most of my AMD rigs wind up being sold to my son at a heathly discount The FX-8150 is stable at 4.8GHz, I do a lot of media work which is the one thing that Bulldozer actually excels at.
  14. No problem on the Bios, it was worth a shot. Interesting point though, the FX-8150 does not have a problem with throttling on the F6 Bios unless the system goes to sleep. Then you need to do the AOD work around, noticed some other notable differences between the 8120 and 8150. I'll post more details in the AMD section later. Since I haven't done a signature yet, should mention that I am running the same Gigabyte motherboard as red and we've been sharing our frustration regarding the power management of the GA-990-FXA-UD7 for a while
