Stonerboy779 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I found a pair of speaker pods in the garage and wanted to fire them up and see what the could do alas that want to be as they were truly broke. So anyway I went ahead pulling them apart and seeing if i could put something new inside. I kind of forgot to take pics at the start but here we go anyway. What was in there I damaged the surround as it had sealed itself to the grill section of the speaker, the voice coil was all jammed up too. Again no before pic but there is two bits of plastic that i took down with my dremel. One was were the cable goes in and out of the pod and the other was from the forming of the plastic. The other crap you see is the poly fill and glue that held it. Now for some new speakers HiVi B3S Fullrange speakers. beside the old pos Now then its a very tight fit I had to coax it in with a bit of force and because the original speakers used non standard mounting dimensions i need to retrofit these speakers. Holes made, I also shave a small amount off of the grill piece poles to match the thickness of the face of the speaker so it'll be sandwiched in. Plastidipped the interior of the pods Put in the poly fill And in with the speakers Now for some final shots with the speakers all wired up, the awesome little stand/mounts for the pods and finally with it hooked up to my portable 2x15watt amp Pretty happy with how the whole thing turned out. Sound is pretty good for 3" speakers in a pos enclosure, when i feel properly motivated i will properly seal the speakers off and deaden behind them fully. But for now they'll do for a bit of portable fun at work.

l1il Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 At least post the speaker's frequency response Nice little modding there! I have an old Altec Lansing set on which I blew the satellite's mid range speakers. I bought the same dimension but they are a big bigger. Now the lower mids sound deeper. Blew them again. Then, I bought some capacitors that I put in series to do a crossover, and they are still alive and kicking to this day!

I gave you the model is it not enough haha HiVi B3S http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=52 After playing with it a while the sound is rather hollow because you are getting the reverse soundwaves because I was too lazy to do it properly. Gonna try amd find some 8mm mdf in the garage over the weekend and properly mount that in there will also create a soundguide around the speaker because it will be sitting back from the grill out of necessity so that it doesn't stick to it like the old speaker. Might sort that out of some firm closed cell foam because these are fairly decent speakers. Got an old radio/alarm clock that I have a class t amp coming for will probably get another b3s for it (only a single 3" or maybey it was 4" speaker). Going to make that portable too, give it aux input and hopefully retain the tuner and clock functionality.
Andrewr05 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I love speaker mods... well, mods of any kind, but I used to replace speakers and fix foam surrounds on older cabinets and people were always amazed at the sound difference. It's amazing what happens when a speaker has a surround again haha Anyway I just mocked up a wave guide and baffle from an old foam sleeping mat and the difference is incredible, much better definition and low end. I now need to go get some closed cell foam and do it properly. Oh and anyone have any ideas on how to cut a perfect round hole in ccf? kennethk Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Yeah but we really cant get the same exact sound as you because we don't have the same frequency as you so of course it's going to sound a bit different

So long as you have something that outputs a really neutral sound if my Audioengine D1 DAC and AKG Q701 headphones. I'll have the speakers properly spaced and well off of my bed haha and will get some music going. Just gotta cut up the closed-cell foam I got. So hopefully tomorrow things will be a go go. Sure you won't get a perfect representation but for all intents and purposes it should be alright.
