Imaging software

Having just recovered from a HD disaster and re built FSX from scratch (again !) I am looking for the best imaging software so I can make a good backup of it.  Acronis seemed the obvious way to go but I am reading very poor reviews on it, especially on Amazon.

Anybody got any recommendations, pay or freeware ?

Cheers.  Buster.

I've been using Acronis Home True Image 2010 (even works with Windows 8, even though they say it's not supported. You get the image saved, and it can be restored, the software just says it wasn't successful even though it was). I'm sure newer versions are better. Be sure to get the Plus Pack so you can get the Universal Restore (which means you can restore an image from say, an AMD CPU and board to an Intel CPU and board, etc.).

Thanks guys, I dont really need to image the whole drive, just FSX, the problem is that with all my add ons including Photo Sceney Gen X for the whole UK, my FSX file is around 80GB.  Can I just copy it over to my spare 600GB back up drive ?

You can't really choose to image a folder of a drive. You can image sectors, or the whole drive, but not specific folders. What you're talking about is more along the lines of backing up for redundancy in case of a disk failure. While software can do what you're asking, you don't need to pay money to do that.

What I usually do is just create a batch script (easy to do), to copy one folder from one disk to another disk on a schedule, and overwriting any older duplicate files. You can schedule it to run daily, or say, when you logout (you'll need to make sure to give it enough time to copy the folders and files over before you actually logout), etc.

The batch script is pretty easy. An example:

set source="C:\FSX"
set destination="D:\FSX\Backup"
xcopy %source% %destination% /y

Open notepad.exe, copy everything, but replace the directory of the source and destination for what you have it at. Then save the file as "backup_fsx.bat". Double-click it, and you're done.

If you want a notification message that the transfer is done, you can add a bit more to the script or use a more advanced language (if you wanted a pop-up or something), etc.
