Motherboard Help

So frustrated right now...just got a NZXT Source 210, i5 2500k, 212 evo, and an Asus P8Z68-V LE motherboard. I first installed all the parts in the case with my current PSU, HDD, GPU, and ram. Everything worked fine until I went into Windows and it started to randomly crash after I opened a few programs. So I thought this could be two things, either a software problem, or its my PSU. I'm using the same Enermax 550W PSU which powered the specs in my signature. Anyway I went ahead and first updated the graphics card driver, lan, chipset, and audio drivers. No luck. I tried the VGA driver too but it said that I didn't meet the minimal requirements or something and it failed to install. I then went on to download the latest BIOS. I used the Asus EZ update in the BIOS to load the latest rom from my HDD (possible problem here?) and then it restarted and gave me a black screen which states: "WARNING! BIOS Recovery Mode has been detected! Please put the file "P8Z68VLE.ROM" into a removable USB media device, and reset your computer. You can also insert ASUS Support CD into your CD-ROM and reset your computer. If you have done these, please wait a moment and don't shutdown your system! _ Well I don't have an optical drive, or the support CD, so the USB was my only option. The file I downloaded was named "P8Z68-V-LE-ASUS-4102.ROM" which is slightly different from what the name should be when it appeared in the BIOS. I put it onto a USB, loaded it, and it took me to the same screen. So I waited for five minutes and nothing changes. I would think this is longer than " a moment"... I then rename the file to exactly what it matched on the BIOS and I'm now stuck at a black screen. I also cleared the CMOS and re-seated the ram. Temperatures are not a problem. The cpu was running around 32 C idle when it was working.

--------------------------------------------

I think downloading one of these programs might solve it, not sure though. I'll go ahead and list them anyway.

Bios Renamer for USB BIOS Flashback and Crashfree BIOS 2

or

Bupdater Utility V1.30 for flash BIOS under DOS. The USB only had the renamed BIOS file on it, nothing else.

--------------------------------------------

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You got the motherboard new or second hand?

The Support CD is the one that comes with the motherboard. If you check the files on it, you should find the .ROM file with the original BIOS version.
Theoretically the BIOS recovery should work.
The original BIOS version is on a thin sticker on the motherboard. (usually, near the 24 pin power connector - the one with a barcode). The last separated 4 digits stand for the board's BIOS version.
But now the recovery might look for the new BIOS file. Try saving on the FAT formatted USB stick the new BIOS file renamed as on the board's DVD. Connect the stick to a USB 2.0 port.

I'll try that later on.

When you update the BIOS, you need to reset CMOS. Also, updating the BIOS clears any BIOS settings you might have had before. Sometimes saved profiles may still exist after a BIOS update and not resetting CMOS. Your board is most likely trying to do something it can no longer do, which is why the stability issues.

Hey Razer.  Building on the quote you had in your post above.

Take your USB stick and format it to FAT32

From the Asus website support page

Download the Bupdater Utility V1.30 for flash BIOS under DOS

Download BIOS version P8Z68-V LE BIOS 4102

Put both files on the formatted USB stick

Rename the BIOS file on the USB to P8Z68VLE.ROM

Before flashing the new BIOS file from your USB stick, make sure to do a full CMOS clear.

Flash new BIOS as normal and see if that works.

Once you have confirmed a successful BIOS flash, shut down your PC, Clear the CMOS and then reboot and load BIOS default values.

Now onto your original problem..........   Before you go any further with a fresh install please run Memtest86+ for eight hours or overnight to ensure that your RAM and current BIOS settings are stable enough to proceed with a fresh OS installation.  If the rig passes Memtest, then you can format your HDD and do a fresh installation of Windows.

If it were me I would be looking for other potential causes of the lockups (besides an outdated BIOS).  I think you have something else going on here.  Maybe a faulty hard drive, bad hard drive interface cable or even a power supply issue.  Since you will be "pre-testing" the memory we can pretty much rule that out if Memtest passes.

Good luck.

Did the exact steps to clear CMOS and loaded the files to the USB. Same problem. When the USB isn't in the computer it boots to the warning message. When I put the USB in the computer it has no post and after about eight seconds the fan speeds start to rev up.

Thanks for the help so far, appreciate it.

When you cleared the CMOS, did you remove the motherboard battery and let it sit "dead" for 4 or 5 minutes?

If you haven't tried that, it would be the next step.

Unplug your power supply from the wall socket

Cycle your case button on/off a couple of times

Remove the m/b battery

Move the CMOS jumper to clear

Let it sit for a few minutes

Try the process again.

When using the USB stick, are you plugging it into one of the USB 2.0 ports on the back I/O?  If you're using a front panel USB or a USB 3.0 port, try using one of the native USB 2.0 on the back I/O panel.

If that doesn't work............  surely you can find an optical drive laying around somewhere...............  Even a new drive is cheap (less than $15 if you find them on sale).

I've tried that before, no luck. Pulled the battery and let it sit dead for 20 mins. When I cleared the jumpers I waited for 30 seconds. Also tried the usb in all ports of the motherboard with the same result every time.

This is what happens when I try to boot the system:

Fans spin, usb light flickers. Then a few seconds later the fans start to spin at higher speeds and the usb light stops flickering.

I noticed this happens no matter which Bios version I use. While this is happening I have no display.

Otherwise when the usb is not in the system it boots to the recovery screen.

I'm hesitant about buying an optical drive because after I would try and use it for recovery, I would have no use for it. I'm afraid it will be fifteen dollars gone to waste. If it's the same file being used in the end why would it work on a DVD and not a usb?

I've spent about three days and countless hours trying to fix this problem. I'm now thinking of just selling the new cooler I won to pay for a new motherboard...

I appreciate your answers but I honestly believe I have bricked my motherboard.
