  1. If I can't get any money soon, you'll find me behind Wal-Mart giving handjobs to meth-heads.

  2. There wouldn't be any point in having one drive on a RAID controller - and I no longer have the luxury of being able to keep stuff that can be turned into money. I may have to sell them separately on eBay though, but I was hoping for a quick sell as we're running out of credit cards to live off. Steve
  3. I looked on eBay and the drives alone are going for a minimum of $98 each (used). So this really is an incredible deal. Someone could buy this package, sell the drives on eBay, keep the controller/cables/battery for themselves and still make $123 profit!
  4. I bought this Dell Perc 6/i RAID controller last year ( model# E2K-UCP-61-(B) : SKU# 341-9960 ), along with the battery backup unit, two sets of SAS->4xSATA cables and 6x Western Digital WD6400AAKS Caviar Blue 640GB hard drives... The Dell Perc 6/i controller has a 256MB DDR2 cache, 2x 4-wide internal SAS connectors (supporting up to 8x SAS or SATA 3GB/s drives), offers RAID levels 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 and connects via PCI-Express x8. The MSRP for the controller alone is $319. The Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS hard drives are SATA 3GB/s, have a transfer speed up to 93.5MB/s and an access time of 8.9ms. These drives are currently $98 each on eBay (used). I was planning to setup a very fast RAID6 media/file server, but my wife has been out of work for nearly 3 months and now we need to sell stuff to survive. The controller and all the drives have been tested (when I bought them I did a full surface scan) and set the drives to TLER enabled - which the new HDD's from WD cannot do anymore. (TLER is "Time Limited Error Recovery", which is an "Enterprise Drive" feature needed for HDD's to work with a hardware RAID controller without the drives timing out and the array failing). I installed a solid copper heatsink with slimline fan from EnzoTech, along with the correct PCI back-plane. The heatsink/fan combo keeps the RAID processor nice and cool, while still allowing room for extra PCI-Express cards to sit nearby. I will include the original heatsink, in case for some reason you need it. The Perc 6/i also includes a working Dell Lithium-Ion battery, so in the event of power failure, data remains in the controller's cache and is committed to disk when power is restored. Four of the six drives are still covered under WD warranty. Three expire on 8/7/2012 and the other expires on 7/4/2012. The other two just expired in January and December. I am asking for $465 + S&H (to be calculated, based on your location) for the entire package. Payment can either be by a PayPal "Personal Transfer"/"Gift Transfer" (sorry, no credit cards - unless you're willing to pay the transaction fees) or a money order. Thank you Steve Location: Spring, TX
  5. Okay, November was very pessimistic, but according to WD inventory and prices are not expected to return to normal until "the March quarter and beyond". http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-20124788/thai-floods-expect-months-of-hard-drive-shortages/
  6. You're right. I did a quick lookup last night and read the stock voltage was 1.125V, but now I can't find where I read it. According to AMD's own specs, the CPU's voltage range is 0.85V to 1.425V. http://products.amd.com/pages/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=522 I guess he just has a bad one then.
  7. He said he had it on 1.4V. The standard voltage is 1.125V, so that's an increase of 24.4% over stock voltage. Even though other people have ran their Phenom XE 720 CPU's at higher voltages, his one may just be sensitive.
  8. The "time limited error recovery" feature merely limits the amount of time the drive will allow itself to repair errors. The time given for standard WD drives is 30 seconds and for their Enterprise drives it's around 6 seconds. When used with hardware RAID controllers, a drive that gives the controller a busy signal for 30 seconds will cause the controller to just fail the drive and in the case of RAID0, fail the entire array. With a limit of 6 seconds to self-repair an error, there is still time left for the drive to respond to the controller and let it return a read error to the OS. At the time I bought my 1TB drives, the WD Caviar Black series of drives were identical to the WD Enterprise drives, at least at the hardware level. Unfortunately, WD had disabled the modifiable TLER setting on that generation, which could previously let the standard drives work reliably with hardware RAID controllers via the use of a commandline tool..
  9. Damn, that would be nice. (If wishes were fishes...)
  10. Sucks to be in the market for a new drive right now, but it's a perfect time to sell my 6xWD 640GB drives and Perc-6 card RAID setup. (I was going to build a very fast RAID6 file/DLNa server, but my wife has been out of work for 6 weeks, so that plan has been cancelled.) I did read somewhere that production may be back to normal by November 2012. This must be working out very well for SSD manufacturers - now that the price difference is far less than before the floods.
  11. Charter Communications is terrible! They're the Public Utility Commission's selected provider for this service area, so they are free from competition. Their customer service sucks; they do not upgrade or invest in their network at all (we still don't have On Demand here in North Houston); most of their technicians don't know what they're doing; twice now - the second being just last week - have they started billing me to lease the modemwhich I bought myself. They're a bunch of damned idiots and I wish I could go back to the semi-stupidness of TWC.
  12. ...the SB6x80 series can bond 8 downstream channels together and 4 upstream channels together. Which is great for future proofing, but currently over-the-top for the majority of people (if your ISP can even provide speeds that fast).
