  1. Hey guys, I installed my new saphire 7970 Ghz edition yesterday and ever since have been getting strange directx 9, 10 , and 11 errors from games like bioshock infinite, and tomb raider. Here's a screen shot of one of the errors: http://imgur.com/0vv9gc9 I've tried re-installing the drivers. No dice. Here is a link to the dxdiag report http://pastebin.com/f2x0bQsb Any ideas?
  2. It took a few hours but it eventually blue screened.... not sure what to adjust now. BTW, if you would like to see pictures of my setup they are posted in this thread: My link
  3. I thought I should follow up and show you all a few pics of the finished product. One thing that changed shortly after I bought this build was the ram. I would up giving my 8 GB's or Gskill to my brother and picked up 16 GB of the Corsair Vengence because I thought it looked cooler. Enjoy! Also, I have started to overclock the machine a bit. If you want to take a look at how it's going here's a link to the thread: My link
  4. Well guys, you helped me put together my system and now its time to OC it! I have read through several threads and tried to gather as much information as I could before jumping in. Here is where I am at so far: I have set the multiplier to 45 The short duration power limit: 250 The long duration power limit: 250 The long duration maintained: 1 second Core current limit: 250 In the voltage control section of the motherboard I have set the following Power saving mode: disabled CPU core voltage: offset mode (showing +1.296V) CPU load-line calibration: Auto (level 5) DRAM voltage: Auto (showing +1.529V) PCH voltage: Auto (showing +1.059V) CPU PLL voltage: 1.750V VCCSA Voltage: 0.925V From what I can tell the system appears to be stable however I did notice that while playing SWTOR the game doesn't seem as smooth as before, especially while traveling, there seems to be a jog in the video once every 3 or so seconds even though my frame rates are now ~7-10/second higher. I have run Prime 95 for over 30 minutes now and I have posted the results below. Any advice on where I should go with this from here is very much appreciated.
  5. So I just placed the rest of my order and here is the final build: Intel i5 2500k - found it at micro center for $179.00 Cooler Master V8 CPU fan - from newegg $49.99 ASRock z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 - from newegg $124.99 G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB - $46.99 Asus 6850 video card - from newegg $159.99 Corsair 650D case - from newegg $179.00 after $10 mail in rebate Windows 7 pro 64 bit OEM - from newegg $139.99 Microsoft SIDEWINDER X4 Keyboard -from newegg $47.99 SAMSUNG S24A350H ToC Rose Black 24" 2ms Full HD HDMI LED BackLight LCD Monitor - from newegg $199.99 Total: $1276.93 before the ~$60 in mail in rebates. I easily could have hit 1K targe if I purchased a cheaper case (yes, I missed the $50 cheaper version - oops) and didn't also purchase a monitor to go with the system. I decided to buy another 6850 and crossfire it with my existing 6850 instead of buying a new 6950. My line of reasoning here is that I'll eventually be able to give them to my wife and for now I'll hold our for the 7000 series. By doing this I saved myself about $100. I also went with the G.Skill sniper memory as I thought it looked cooler than the mushken although I still really appreciate the memory recommendation I was given earlier, it ended up influencing my decision and saved me some money. Lastly, I ditched the SSD for right now. I have a 1TB western digital laying around and a 60 GB OCZ SSD in another system that I think I will rob. I'm going to try out the new intel smart response technology that is built into the z68 northbridge on this system to see how it works. With the savings I was able to throw in a new keyboard and monitor. I feel like this is going to be a very nice upgrade over my current i3 box. I'll post some pics once I get it all together. Thank you all for your help!
  6. So I bought a few of the parts today. Here is what I ordered so far: Intel i5 2500k - found it for $179.00 corsair 650D - from newegg $179.00 after $10 mail in rebate (great suggestion Tjj226_Angel) COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP Windows 7 pro 64 bit I think I will order the motherboard, ram and SSD after the 1st. I'm still not sure on which motherboard to get though, the asrock seems good but now I'm thinking I should break the budget a bit and go for something a little nicer. If there is a preffered mobo that anyone can suggest for pairing up with an i5 I'd love to hear about it.
  7. Perhaps I would be better off with this mother board: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155? Seems like it overclocks nice for the money.
  8. Hey Gents, I just got a year end bonus and would like to build a new 1155 rig with some of the money. I have 2 goals: 1 it must play star wars old republic and 2: be under $1000.00. I already have a corsair 850 watt power supply so that will help. Here are the parts I'm considering. The biggest unknown to me here is the mobo and RAM. Any input is appreciated. Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) HIS IceQ X Turbo H695QNT2G2M Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Cooler Master HAF 922 *I am at $984.94 as it is.
  9. Some of these are server software, some desktop and a few are services but they're all free and I love em! Handbrake Magento Digsby Chrome Utorrent Livezilla Wordpress Zimbra skype picasa lastpass evernote
  10. As you can see from all of the previous posts you should have both just to be safe. I run the following on my work machine: Comodo, Malwarebytes, Spyware S&D and Hijack this.
  11. making good use of the interwebz

  12. This first one is to Denver: I tried Utah next:
  13. Thanks for your input guys. The Rampage looks awesome but it's nearly $400 I guess I need to save up some more $$. Thanks for the advise about Intel's new i7 CPU, I don't have to build this right away so I think I'll wait and see what happens when the new chip comes out.
  14. Hey guys, I am looking to build the following rig as a replacement for my aging machine. Any thoughts on what I should do differently would be much appreciated! Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 932 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GH Motherboard: ASUS P5Q3 LGA 775 Intel P45 Video card: 4870 1GB (Saphire 100243-1GL) Power supply: Thermaltake 750Wm (W0116RU) RAM: Patriot Viper 4GB DDR3 1333 (PVS34G1333LLK) HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA (ST31000340AS) OS: Vista 64 A few more things you should know: I am planning on buying 4 of the Seagate drives and running them in RAID 0+1. I love the idea of modularized cable management on power supplies so I would like to stick with one that can do that (unless there is a really good reason to do otherwise). Also, I intend to use an aftermarket CPU fan, perhaps one of the Zalman fans or the new Cooler Master V8!!! I am a bit concerned about which fan to chose as I would like to upgrade to 8GB of ram in the future and realize that most of these fans block the ram slots on your motherboard making that impossible. I look forward to your input!
