There is the option to go to a typical desktop layout. " If you absolutely loathe Metro apps, you can spend all of your time in the desktop section of the OS, with the exception of your lock screen and Start Screen." HERE Its under the desktop section in the article. However, it is stated that there may be no reason to switch to Win 8 if you don't like the MetroUI, as Win 7 isn't going away any time soon.

+1. Installed it on my laptop, it's horrible. My last 2 Facebook posts are pretty much a nerdrage about butthurt i've experienced with Metro UI. I am using Win8 consumers preview copy, today is the third day (just to be fair and really give it a try before i QQ). I hoped my opinion would change with time and that it's just i am not used to the new look and feel. It changed indeed - now i know for sure, it's good for smartphones/tablets, and is a no-no for PCs. Plus, every time i open an app it sends me into XBOX-store like looking screen, asks me to sign in with Microsoft account and shows a number of things i havent asked for. When i launch a Video app i want it to show categorized number of videos i have on my PC not an offer to buy Twilight (no offence for the series fans :D ).

All that being said, i'll stick to Win7 for as long as possible, least an option to disable Metro is added on release.

Sad to say, but the bad, good, bad, good, life cycle is continuing here. Vista was an attempt to haul over XP like no other, and 7 fixed the issues. While 8 brings welcomed features, Microsoft is doing it again just as airman pointed out.
