one of ram slots not working

Recommended Posts

I have an old computer about 10 years. It began freezing after checking for memory errors I concluded that there was a fault in one of RAM slot as the same RAM which had no errors in another slot(when only at a time single RAM is used) began showing errors in MEMTEST.Please tell can this be fixed and how ??

If one of the memory slots of the motherboard is faulty, there is not much you can do about it.

The only "solution" there is, is not to insert a ram stick in the faulty slot for a proper functioning machine.

Seeing the pc is ten years old, maybe it is time for an upgrade? :P

We may try use a cotton stick to get some medical use alcohol to clean the RAM slot pins.

Just need to make sure wait for the alochol to dry out completely before installing the RAMs and power on the computer again.

Hope this helps.

Or a soft toothbrush with isopropyl alcohol and rub/brush the slot, wait for it to dry and then try again.

EDIT: Also clean the contacts on the RAM modules as well. Just in case...

Take a close look at the DIMM slot with a magnifying glass and strong light because you may see corrosion, lint, or even a bent contact.

Don't clean DIMM slots with cotton swabs but instead get some cardboard the same thickness as a DIMM edge connector.  Apply alcohol to it and insert and remove it several times to clean the slot.

Most retail DIMMs are marginal because they're made from chips that are slower than the module ratings or unbranded chips (factory rejects).
