In fact most of those were not really upgrades but side steps. I am betting that what you are showing is mostly testing, not real world use. AM3+ there were plenty of CPU upgrades you could do without getting a new motherboard. I've also known some people that didn't know their Z68 motherboards were GEN3, and they ended up buying a Z77 motherboard when sidegrading from an i7 2600K to an i7 3770K - they could have sidegraded using the 3770K on the Z68/GEN3 motherboard. :facepalm: Share this post Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Of course I started out back on Socket A so I've had plenty of time I would not call going from an i7 950 to an i7 2700K a sidegrade. I definitely see an improvement in everything I do. A sidegrade is going from an i7 950 to an i5 2500K, or an i7 2700K to an i7 3770K. Going from an i7 2700K to an i7 3930K is definitely an upgrade. Speedway Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 On the AMD AM3 platform, I went: x2 7750 x4 925 x4 955 x4 965 Going from the 955 to the 965 was completely pointless, but I was trying to squeak some extra OC headroom out of the 965 and got a great deal on it, and sold the 955 for more than I paid for the 965! I also agree with Capi on the 1st gen i7 and 2nd gen i7 being a sidegrade. I went from an OCing beast i7 930 that would hit 4.6GHz to a OCing beast 2600K that has hit 5.5GHz.
