  1. Hey guys.. sorry to necro my old thread but I just wanted to give an update of what I've done with regard to my build. ALOT of changes were made and I am happy to say that it should be arriving Monday Here's the new component list CPU - i5-2500k CPU Cooler - Corsair H60 Mobo - ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 RAM - 8Gb Dorsair Vengeance 1600Mhz Power Supply - Corsair HX 850W Videocard - MSI 448core Twin Frozr III 560 ti Case - Cooler Master HAF 912 (with added fans of course ) SSD - Patriot Pyro 120Gb HDD - WD Caviar Black 500Gb ($129 CURSE YOU THAILAND FLOODS!!!) Misc Extras Mouse - Logitech G500 Headset - Logitech G330 Webcam - Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 ASUS DVD Burner, Rosewill Wireless Card I plan on picking up a keyboard soon (will be using a piece of crap one for now) as well as a speaker system (5.1 most likely) and another V-card for SLI (provided that the 448 core cards arent taken out of production by the time I've saved up enough). I went a bit over my budget, but after a few months of delays, I felt like treating myself lol Thanks everyone for your help.. I hope to pop my overclocking cherry soon
  2. thanks for all the feedback so far guys I just have an update regarding the build and some new questions. First off, I won't be able to get the ASRock mobo because it is not available from Tigerdirect.ca (the purchasing will be done at their store in Markham Ontario and I only have a 5-day window for shopping and buying online is out of the question). Therefore I am now faced with a choice of these 3 motherboards: ASUS P8P67 B3 Intel P67 Motherboard ($184) ASUS P8P67 Pro B3 Intel P67 Motherboard ($200) ASUS P8Z68-V Intel Z68 Motherboard ($200) some things to consider: 1. I will NOT be doing heavy overclocking 2. The rig will be used primarily for gaming/CAD suites at 1440x900 resolution MAX. 3. I'm trying to be as cost effective as possible on this build Currently I'm leaning towards the ASUS P8Z68-V Intel Z68 Motherboard.. Can I get some of your views? Finally , these motherboards all have two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots so this opens the possiblilty of SLI further down the road for me (dual MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 Video Cards). I read here that the full-load power draw was around 628W so I'm wondering if a 650W power supply will be sufficient or should I play it safe and get a 750W supply? Thanks in advance!
  3. @pkilway lol @medbor thanks for the feedback I'll look into the P67 more then, because I'd like as much cost effectiveness of this build as possible The reason I chose this 560Ti model was because of the much better temperature scores and similiar performance scores it got in the reviews I checked (see Hardware Canucks and Tom's Hardware and not forgetting OverclockersClub ) I would really like a cool running system so I'm prepared to shell out a little extra for a card with a good aftermarket heatsink. With regards to the SSD I might delay the addition till I can afford a higher capacity one (like 120GB) as I was reading how a SSD performs best with some additional space left over (is this true?) and with Windows and a few games installed, I don't wanna bog it down. I'll rethink the PSU when it comes time to buy as it seems to be the 'weak link' of the system
  4. @wevsspot thanks for the feedback since you guys suggested it, I'll look into a 650W supply (probably the CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W which has 2 of the 6+2 pin connectors) I see on newegg they're both the same price so if the difference is not too large, I'll try for that one instead.
  5. @yuridude thanks for the feedback and the offer but I'm located in the Caribbean
  6. @pkilway thanks for the feedback I think my wording was bad with that... i meant i'd buy one SSD and use it for booting and a few programs Also, I don't plan on any further upgrades for this pc at all. When it's near obsoletion I will just use it as the family pc for my mom to play her flash games and the like (or whatever is around at that time lol) Would 550W be ample power for the system? @My_Inner_Fred thanks for the feedback I think I'll definitely go with the ripjaws then, they look stunning and from the reviews I read, they perform great. Does it make sense to go with 1600 RAM over 1333 if I plan minor overclocking later on? That is, is the difference big enough to notice?
  7. What's up guys & gals.. I'm looking for some feedback/opinions on this setup I'm planning. Notable Points: 1. I will be using a MAX RESOLUTION OF 1440x900 (this is the res of a monitor I already have and I don't plan on gettin another till this one dies) 2. It will be used primarily for gaming (and maybe CAD/CAM suites such as AutoCAD/Solidworks etc) 3. I am clueless with regard to overclocking right now but plan to OC later on as I learn from this site (not heavily though) 4. Games will be the usual big titles: Civilisation 5, The Witcher, Dead Space, Mass Effect etc. 5. I don't plan on further expansion of the build in terms of SLI etc The Components: Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 (adding two CM 200mm Megaflow Red LED fans for front/top) CPU : Intel Core i5-2500K CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212+ Motherboard: AsRock Z68 PRO3 RAM : GSkill Ripjaws X Series OR Corsair Vengeance (both 1600MHz, 2x4GB, 9-9-9-24, 240pin DDR3.. leaning towards the GSkill based on the smaller heatspreader) Videocard: MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 Video Card SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 60GB (for boot and one or two programs/games) HDD: Western Digital RE4 500GB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 Power Supply Keyboard: Microsoft Sidewinder X6 OR Thermaltake E-Sports Challenger Pro Mouse: Logitech MX 518 Wired Optical Gaming Mouse OR Logitech G500 Wired Laser Gaming Mouse Headset: Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset I will also be adding on a PCI Wireless Network Card, CD/DVD Burner. Any feedback/opinions/suggestions are welcome on ANY component. Thanks in advance!

    Woi!

    Thanks for the welcome!
  9. This guide nearly single-hahdedly made me join this community.. I hope to make use of it soon in building my own first rig Well done Crazy_Nate

    Woi!

Hey everyone, I've been browsing this site for the past few months and have just created this account because I believe this is a great place for me to begin my journey into the forest of PC knowledge/Overclocking. Now that the "why?" has been answered, here's the "who?" I'm 23 year old male and friends call me Bicks, it's a far off name from my actual name, but after much twisting and turning (not to mention drinking! ), I have grown fond of Bicks as my nick. Speaking of nick, I guess I half explained my username here with that last sentence, now for the other. "868" is the area code of my country (yep, it's that small ) Trinidad and Tobago is its name and it is located at the very bottom of the chain of islands known as the Caribbean. "when?" is simply answered by November 2010 as it was then that I came across this site as I searched for reviews of components that I hoped would become my first self-built rig (that's "how?" btw ) With regards to "what?" ummm... I can't really answer that unless I add on "..do you plan to do now that you joined this community?". Well, I hope to emerge from under the rock of pre-built systems and eventually reach the penthouse of computer enlightenment. (ok... i suck at metaphors, I'm better known for my sarcasm anyway ) Basically, I hope to learn and put to use the knowledge contained on this site as well as that of its members to build my first gaming rig and overclock it as well. I also plan to stick around as computers on the whole fascinate me and I do believe that it is a worthwhile thing to learn about. I hope this is the beginning of something great..Cheers! p.s. "woi" is the equivalent of "Hi" in my country
