  1. Good morning everyone. Let me provide some additional info on what I am doing. Yes, I do a lot of Handbrake conversions, but I also use Cyberlink PowerDirector to edit and render my GoPro and home video camera files. Both sources are HD (typically 1080). I also do some conversation with MCEBuddy on my HTPC files to strip the commercials and drop them on my iPad for when I travel. Although I often use my Windows Home Server to do this. Thanks everyone.
  2. Good eveing all. So I am starting to get more bugs with my MB (random shut downs, not finding my boot drive, etc.) and am thinking of replacing it. I don't do a lot of real hard core gaming, but run decent resolutions (1920 X 1200) with Skyrim. The more taxing jobs on my system are HD video editing from my GoPro Hero3 Black and video transcribing with Handbrake. Current system is at the bottom of post. I am thinking of replacing my MB with: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard And while I am at it I am considering a couple other upgrades and wanted peoples thoughts: 1) Is it worth it to up the RAM to 16GB. I am thinking of: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL 2) Is it worth it to upgrade my video card? i am running two (2) Radeon 6870 in Crossfire now. The GTX 770 and 780 just came out... Would I notice a big improvement in my video editing and transcripting with a new video card? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks everyone. 3. Ok - successful rebuild, but now I am a little worried about a disk failing again. Would it make sense over time to swap out each drive (i.e. swap out the next one with a Seagate, let it rebuild, run for a week, swap out the next, etc...) until the entire set is replaced. I am worried about the amount of internet forum posts that mention not using WD Green drives for RAID.
  4. Thanks for the info. I am chugging along and am 59% into the rebuild without an error. Any ideas on why the array failed to begin with?
  5. Good afternoon everyone, BLUF - After over a year of flawless operation, my server's RAID5 is flipping out. 6. Thanks everyone - I think at this point I will just use the PP&C and save the money. In terms of efficiency - I would likely do better by remembering to turn off my lights more frequently Thanks for everyone's reply's and Happy New Year.
  7. Afternoon all, I have a PSU question. I am assembling a basic HTPC for my basement and have the following components on order (not really looking for comments on the build): 1 x AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic ... 1 x ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM 1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL 1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM 1 x Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1850 MC-Kit FM radio and MCE remote PCI-E x1 1 x MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 FM2 AMD A85X (Hudson D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard 1 x NZXT Source 210 S210-001 Black
  8. Followed all the advice and nothing I think it might be time to RMA the board. Last night I did a clean BIOS update, clean Vista install, clean nforce driver (15.23), clean nvidia video drivers (177.79), installed SP1 and other Vista updates and everything worked fine until I added the second video card - then BSOD until I took the second card out.
  9. Try turning the side fan 90 degrees. I did that on mine and my IFX-14 then fit.
  10. will do - didn't know there were new nforce drivers out there - I always check the vid cards
  11. So in my continuing saga to get a stable computer I have RMA'd both my RAM and one of my video cards. Figured I would start fresh and do a clean install of Vista as well. Everything runs fine until I enable SLI. Once that happens I get a BSOD on startup 0x00000116 and nvlddmk.sys errors. Can't boot into windows, so I uninstall Nvidia drivers (problem happens with 177.15, 177.79, and 177.98), clean with Driver Sweeper, reinstall and everything runs fine until I try to enable SLI. Rinse and repeat. Below are my bios settings. I manually set my voltages (including RAM), but have not adjusted RAM timing over auto (except 1T to 2T) as I feel they are probably too aggressive (7-7-7-18) for trying to get a stock stable system. 12. Ok, I stand corrected - last night while running memtest with the SPP at 1.5 I recieved video artifacts during memtest. I also had a hardlock while leaving the system running overnight (fully booted). Both of these instances were with the second video card by itself. Therefore I think the second video card is goin to be RMA'd.
  13. Ok - so I have continued to test components individually and here is where things stand. RAM On stock SSP voltage my single stick RAM was getting 1-2 errors in 20-42 passes Then tried 2 sticks in dual channel and got 7 errors out of 19 passes on stock SSP voltage and 7 errors out of 32 passes on with a SSP voltage of 1.4V Upped the SSP voltage to 1.45V and got 4 errors on 39 passes. So I am wondering what I can safely run my SSP voltage at to see if more juice is the issue. Video Cards So each card seems to run fine by itself in the slot closest to the CPU. I thought maybe once I switched the cards I would begin to have artifacting agian, but not so far. So what are my next steps? The RAM is still running default timings and speed, but I have upped the voltage to the manufacture recommended setting (1.9V). The cards are running singlarly rather than SLI. Thoughts?
  14. I use a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium because the mounts for keyrings kept breaking on my other drives (which all had plastic casings)
