DexRain Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Traded a friend of mine my 9600's for his 8600's as a christmas gift after I got my 6870, so now i have almost enough parts lying around to upgrade my parents computer, problem is I don't think the 380w Antec that's in there now would be able to handle the 2 8600's So I'm looking for the best PSU for the money to power the following. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Motherboard: EVGA 133-K8-NF41 GPU: 2x EVGA 8600GTS 256mb HDD: 2x WD Caviar Blue 320gb sata Ram: 2.5gb DDR400 (2x 1gb, 2x 256mb) Currently running an Athlon 2700+ on an Asus K8U-X with an old Radeon 7500 64mb AGP 4x and 2gb's of DDR400 Currently looking at a few different PSU's from PC P&C, Seasonic, Corsair, and Antec I'm leaning more towards the Antec right now as it's tied with the Seasonic for the most watts and the most amps on the +12v rail of the 4 while coming up as the least expensive of the bunch, it's only 80+ not 80+ Bronze but my parents computer isn't on 24/7 365 like mine is, I know the PC P&C wil power these cards as it's the same PSU they were previously hooked up to but it's just as expensive as the seasonic with less watts and less amps on the +12v rail. I just need a bit of advice to point me in the right direction to help give my parents a smoother computing experience and a power supply that's going to last. joel.monteiro Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Well since its a branded psu with that config it should be sufficient.
IVIYTH0S Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Try their 380W and if it's not enough get the 520W Antec why not just run one 8600??
dihartnell Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Try their 380W and if it's not enough get the 520W Antec why not just run one 8600?? My C2D rig is currently running at 220W when in windows 2D mode. Im assuming your parents are not big gamers so I think your 380W PSU should be fine. What will they use it for. Probably one GPU is fine. Although saying that my 83 year old father loves his Car games and regularly plays NFS so an SLI rig might benefit there. I wonder if he would be more happy with that instead of me helping to paint the roof this summer.
DexRain Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 My dad plays Civil War RTS and my mom plays web games haha. The most strenuous activity that computer gets used for is a remote desktop program my dad uses to access his server at work, medical records for a doctors office. I'll try running both on the 380w and if it doesn't work I'll just throw the one 8600 for now, it's still a big upgrade over the 7500 in there now

UT66 Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 just run one 8600GTS and see how that goes, it should be fine, keep the other as " backup" IF the performance is an issue, try the other gpu and see if its worth buying a new psu (i dont think so)
