which type of mother board should i use for amd graphics

Recommended Posts

this will be a high end build but, i need to doing some learning before i pick the components.

i need a mother board that can handle doing or should i say creating computer aided animation, both in 2d and 3d

i have been informed to use amd graphics cards as these are geared towards an opencl which is what most of the software that will be used needs.

next i need to figure out which high end mother board i should use; either and intel board with sandybridge technology, or an amd mother board with northbridge technology.

your input is greatly appreciated.

p.s. the system will using the maya 3d software and adobe cs6, my son may or may not use this system for gaming as well.

I use the software you listed plus 3DSMax 2012 and AV editors. As well as ultra high res gaming.

Good luck with the build

First lets clear some confusion, ANY motherboard can handle the jobs you want to do. The speed difference between a $300 motherboard and a $100 motherboard with the same CPU and same GPU is ZERO! Higher end boards offer a lot of neat features but most of them are wasted.  Buying a motherboard you need to ask yourself two basic questions.

1) Will I be overclocking? If you are planning to overclocking, spending a little extra money can help as many of the more expensive boards have better overclocking ability. The how much you need to spend however is still not as high as people think. Basic overclocking, that is a limited overclocking without pushing voltages can be done even on very budget minded boards. However even if you want tp push the overclock to higher levels, you can often find great boards at the $150 price point that can keep up with more expensive boards.

2) Are you going to use a multi-card system for the GPU?  Again you will find that if you do plan to go with a Crossfire or SLI solution that you do not need to go to expensive boards to get the best results. The key here to me is to look at the various board layouts and see which has the best design to give both cards room to breath. In the AMD CPU arena if you are not going to Crossfire then I suggest looking at 970 based motherboards. They have a great price point, good feature set and only really lose Crossfire over higher cost boards.

I would personally do more research into the software I am using to find how it functions with multi-threading. If you can find something that pushes the cores hard enough the FX 8 core is actually a solid chip. The issue it has faced in the enthusiast and consumer market is that so little really pushes the design and the areas were the design excels is not shown. Also depending on the level of work you will be doing you might want to consider and Intel Extreme solution. Quad channel memory suffers from much the same frustration that the AMD FX does in the fact that nothing in the current computing world, with specific exceptions, push the memory bandwidth and thus allows it to show off.

Good choices by Red.

Other choices could be Gigabyte 990fx-ud5, Asus Crosshair V (a bit costlier).

Talking about CPU cooling, if you are interested in overclocking, and by overclocking I mean good overclocking, I would suggest you to go for a strong cooler like Corsair H100. Otherwise, a general cooler like Hyper 212 evo will suffice.

@ ED

1) He said high end build

2) The MB I recommended is $190.00 not $300 (it's a very good value)

3) I said I use the software he uses and it is very heavily multithreaded,

The recommendations I made are a very good solution for what he describes.

*** d6 makes a good choice for cooling based on usage.

I was checking on systems certified by Autodesk for use with Maya. Here's a link to Boxx Computers Maya Modeling, Animation and Local CPU & GPU Rendering systems.....  http://www.boxxtech.com/solution-configurations/maya-modeling-animation-and-local-cpu-gpu-rendering

i took a look at boxxtech and they are way over priced, as well as orginpc, but i do appreciate the offer of help

Well thats great if he can afford a dual Xeon and quad Tesla./Quadro system then go for that.

He however specified a AMD system for rendering and some gaming.

Well, my thoughts were for you to see what systems they offer that are Autodesk certified for use with Maya.  Since it seems Maya has very specific requirements fo run properly and give the best preformance.

Actually he specified an AMD video card not system and using your own push about high end if he needed the most bang and his budget allowed it the Extreme 6 Cores would give high levels of performance between faster processors, even better multi-thread handling and quad core memory plus the ability to have up to 64 Gigs of RAM to give even more boost if needed. You did stress his wanting HIGH END.
