Build for my brother

This is going to be my brother's first ever PC build. I have tried pointing him in the right direction with some of the parts and what to change. This is a quick build below of what he is thinking about getting. I wanted to get a few more opinions before he pulled the trigger.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

MB: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

CASE: Antec Three Hundred Two ATX Mid Tower Case

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card

PSU: Rosewill Capstone 650W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply (this one got passed me, I will tell him about Corsair or PC P&C PSU's)

COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (I have since told him to look at the self contained water coolers, but this might be enough for him?)

HD1:Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk

HD2: some 1TB Drive

He is a student so he will get the OS from school, and I was going to pick up a few things at the micro-center to save him money. He is looking to spend around $1k from what he has told me. If anyone has any input, feel free to let me know! Thanks a lot.

You may want to change the SSD choice to a samsung 830 SSD. Right now on newegg it is 90 bucks which makes it cheaper than the crucial, plus it is faster and generally considered more reliable (however that part is debatable).

If you brother likes white cases, you can use the NZXT source 210 elite for 15 bucks less. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146077

Since I assume this build will take some time, you should probably pay attention to the samsung ram and get some of that to save your brother a few extra dollars (and he can OC it all he wants) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147094

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=65701&vpn=ST1000DM003&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1296 This is the cheapest HDD (that still has a fair amount of performance and reliability) that I could find. Hope it helps!

I also found the gigabyte AMD 7950 here for a bit cheaper than newegg http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=67546&vpn=GV-R795WF3-3GD&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1296 and the ( well it is essentially the same price, but you don't have to fill out a rebate and you don't have to pay for shipping)

I got a convert! ;)

Yeah I have been following the OC.net samsung memory thread and it seems that the samsung ram REALLY loves asus z77 motherboards and ivy bridge chips. My two kits arrived just yesterday and although I already mentioned this in the deal thread, I will say again for the benefit of coors and possibly others, I was able to get 2400mhz at 10-11-11-28-1t at 1.6v completely stable.

Considering it is cheaper, low profile, and it can go head to head against the gskill trident or corsair platinum memory the only reason you shouldn't buy it is because of availability.

It would be a very good choice. Although it is out of stock in newegg, your bro can always buy it from microcenter.

Here is the link from their site: http://www.microcenter.com/product/380720/8GB_DDR3-1600_%28PC3-12800%29_CL11_UDIMM_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit_%28Two_4GB_Memory_Modules%29

Price is HIGH compared to the price at which it was being sold at newegg.

Thanks for the input guys (especially the CPU, wasn't aware Rosewill was okay). I will have to see if he wants me to buy more things from Microcenter while I am there to save him money. He will be buying the rest over black Friday and cyber Monday, so it will all be purchased soon. Always nice to save a few bucks! :thx:
