Phil Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I just bought a used Harmon Kardon receiver. I am able to connect my iphone via the microphone port to play music. dr_bowtie Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 thats the issue.. it's putting stereo to Mono with the 1 less ring... go into the Sound properties of the laptop and set the setting to Mono and see if that doesnt fix it... EDIT: the tips should all carry the same polarity... but if for some reason one of the ends has the wires switched it will hum bad on some setups... the stem of the earphone jack and the outer casing of the RCA is Ground and the centers are the polarity or Positive signal... you might check it with an ohms tester to make sure... You say your cable has 3 rings on the 3.5mm plug. Those are generally for use with cell phones with 1 ring for left, 1 for right and the third ring for mic or in AV cables with one ring being left, one right and the third composite video. or it can be for audio with one rig for lrfy, 1 for right and 1 for center or sub.
