Any way to fix a physically damaged USB port?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys because of tangled wires and my own laziness I think the 2 USB 2.0 ports I was using for my mouse and keyboard on the back of my motherboard are now probably warped.  The wires were sorta tight for a while when I was using it and randomly today the sound that Windows makes when you plug in and unplug a new USB device kept playing.  Finally both the keyboard and mouse stopped working.  I tried plugging them into a different usb port and sure enough it works.  Is there any way to fix this sort of thing or am I better off just forgetting about it?

Yep, pics would be great.  In most situations the USB hub is soldered onto the motherboard.  It might be possible to repair it depending on what is actually broken.  You might be able to re-solder the connections if the posts aren't broken.  If the posts are broken it could be a loss if you can't find a replacement USB hub.

Ah.  I don't have pictures because I'm at work but looking at the back of the case last night it looked fine.  But when I plug in both my mouse and keyboard in to those 2 ports the LEDs on both flash on and off.  It sounds like more work than its worth as I've never had good soldering skills and I don't want to unplug everything and take it all apart over 2 USB ports.  I guess the PCI card is the way to go. =\ Thanks guys, I figured as much.

I do agree to give an expansion of USB 3.0 ports to your PC.

You could choose:

4 Ports USB 3.0 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1HD0K30935&Tpk=ht%20pc001

3 Ports USB 3.0?http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815124119

2 Ports: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815287015

Or more on newegg or amazon searching usb 3.0 pci-e card
