My photography

Wanted to post up a link to my photography.

Kind of looking for feedback either it be good, bad, or indifferent I don't really care.

I have been shooting for a year now. I got my DSLR last year about this time.

I really dig night time photography as you will probably see when looking at my stuff. I really enjoy photographing stars.

Tell me what you think. Maybe things I could do different/better?

Thanks!

I don't use Photoshop. I have yet to really learn how to use it. All of my photos are directly off of my camera added a watermark and then uploaded with no editing.

The startrails I use startrails.exe to take my 100+ photos and compile them together.

The HDR Shots are typically 3-5 photos taken at multiple exposures. Then tossed into Photomatix. This program compiles my HDR shots for me.

I know if I could learn gimp or Photoshop I could probably end up with a better photo, but I just have not had any good luck trying to edit.

I would suggest getting Adobe Lightroom as it really makes the photo process much easier. The only thing it doesn't handle is panaramas but you can use PS or something else to do that. Second if you aren't using RAW yet, I suggest you do as once again, it makes everything easy to edit in post.

Othwerwise I like the ones I saw and if you need help with night photos shoot me a PM.

Thanks guys!

I shoot in RAW + JPEG.

I open my NEF(RAW) files in ViewNX (Nikon's Software) and I always make sure I got my White Balance right.

One of the best reasons to shoot in RAW lol!

I will take a look at finding Lightroom and see what it is all about.

Lightroom is amazing and much better than Cannon or Nikon stupid software. Basically it's like if Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop had a baby, thats lightroom. I got it on sale from newegg for $50 but I would gladly pay the full $150 if I needed a new copy. The major difference between LR4 and 5 is very small so if you can find LR4 for cheap I would just get that.

I have roughly 5000 photos sitting in lightroom completely organized and color corrected. The good thing about lightroom is that you can move the library to any computer and not worry about losing settings or files. Its great if your computer dies or working on a different machine like a laptop for a day. Just remember to back up the catalog or all your settings are gone (if you choose to work that way).

anyways if you need help I can or this video tutoral is great for starters . Getting Started with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5

If anyone knows photogrpahy, night shot are a pain in the butt. Good job getting those clouds and moon without blurring.

If you want to frezze the stars use the formula 600/MM so if i'm using a 85mm lens, it would be 600/85=7.05 seconds before the stars move. It seems to work well enough but for my 14mm lens the stars are slightly blurry @ 30seconds, so you'll have to play around with it.

edit: You also want to look out for vindetting which will occur on both cheap and good lens if you have the F-Stop wide open. If you can you'll find F8 the sharpest no matter what lens your using, its the sweet spot.

Good books to read are Night Photography: Finding your way in the dark and Digital Photography: A Basic Manual. Now you my secrets :)
