I'm looking into getting the a40s 2013 edition. I was just wondering if anyone had any advise on any other brands I'm looking for sound quality btw. Also the headset doesn't have to be 5.1 or whatever.I mostly game fps nothing really else.also ill be picking up a sound card at some point.

Surround sound makes a huge difference in fps. It makes it nice to be able to hear someone from behind to avoid being knifed. I use Razer tiamat 7.1 and really like them. I also have a Logitech g930 set and is a pretty good set also but the Razer has the better sound out of the two.

I just use a Audio Technica ATH-M50, sometimes use my Sennheiser HD 280 PROs. However those aren't gaming headsets, I don't think surround sound is necessary.

I use to use a creative headset with surround sound for gaming purposes but after switching to standard stereo audio, I haven't really noticed a different. Locating players by sound seems just as sharp as if I was using something with surround sound.

The only reason to buy A40s is if you're picking up the full package (Headset/Mixamp). Otherwise, Steelseries Siberia V2s are a very good alternative, especially at half the price, and roughly the same sound quality with a significant comfort advantage.

(Source: I've owned original A40s, 2011 A40s, and used the 2013 A40s. The 2013 are a significant improvement with the new earpads, and reportedly they're wired a bit better than the originals, which were an atrocious mess.)

If you don't mind spending a bit more, then Sennheiser PC350s are of better build quality, and are more comfortable than the A40s. Sound quality is roughly on par with the A40s, but they're closed air. The open air alternative would be the PC360s, which are getting quite expensive these days.

Don't overlook the Creative Aurvana Live! 2 cans.

I've got the original Aurvana Live and wouldn't trade them for the world, but version 2 improves on even those.  Seriously worth consideration for a good all around headphone at a reasonable price.

Lots of great reviews on the original Aurvana's and well worth the read.

Here are a couple of good links for researching the version 2 if you want to investigate further;
