  1. Great advice. I'll make the change! Now I just need to find some!
  2. What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. General use with some gaming mixed in. I would love to do VR in the future. I build a new computer about every 5 years or so, so I go bigger than I probably need knowing that I won't be doing it again for awhile. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) Good 1080P with the option in the future of going a little bigger. Smooth framerate capable of VR in the future. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? $1600 with Vega 56 Graphics card In what country are you purchasing your parts? I got the motherboard at Micro Center for the $30 off combo deal with the CPU. If you think I should get a different motherboard don't hesitate to speak up. I'm also completely open to changing out nearly all the parts if better options are available.
  3. Im looking at upgrading one of my hard drives to a Western Digitial 6TB Black. This will not be my mine hard drive. Just music, movies etc... I'm currently using a Asus P5W DH-Deluxe mobo. I believe I have a limit of 2TB per drive that can be used. My questions is: Can i still use this new drive up to 2TB with my current setup (until i upgrade my pc in 8 months or so?) If I put this new drive in a new pc will then show 6TB(5.5TB) without formatting? Old Motherboard: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131025&cm_re=asus_p5w_dh_deluxe-_-13-131-025-_-Product WD Black 6TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236970&ignorebbr=1 Thanks for the help!
  4. But it perfectly reads my install dvd which is on a DVD. The drive was working fine before i re-installed windows 7. I also had the bios set at "Basic" instead of ACHI. Could that be the problem?
  5. I recently wiped my computer and re-installed Windows 7. Everything seems to be working fine, but my Blu-Ray drive. It is my only disc drive in the computer. The Problem: It doesn't seem to properly read dvd's or Blu-Rays. It reads the windows 7 install dvd. Under my computer it shows the drive. And sometimes the disc, but when i try and play a movie in PowerDVD or something similar nothing shows up. In the BIOS i have SATA as ACHI. The Drive: LG GGC-H20L Thanks rh535
  6. Battlefield 3 and Saints Row 3 struggle. Battlefield 3 is barely playable and Saints Row can't be played. Anything within the next year like Mass Effect 3 will probably be unplayable.
  7. I thought i would have a new computer by now, but i decided on studying aboard instead. Because of this i was looking at just upgrading my GPU to hold me over for a year. I should have upgraded earlier, but like i said i thought i would have a new rig by now. I also wont use this card in my new rig next year. This card is just to hold me over. I currently have a eVga 8800 GTS 320MB. I was looking at a new 6850 or 6870. My monitor resolution is 1680 x 1050. Budget: Under $175 My Specs: Mobo – Asus P5W DH Deluxe CPU – Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz : Running at 2.30 GPU - EVGA 320-P2-N817-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 Memory - Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) & Another set of name brand memory (2 x 1GB) Monitor - SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb (I have 4 of these) Keyboard – Microsoft Sidewinder X6 Mouse – Logitech G5 PSU – OCZ 600w Games I play / want to play: Battlefield 3 Saints Row 3 Mass Effect 3 Questions: 1. With my monitor resolution and CPU would a 6850 even be worth the money? 2. If not(1st Question), what would be the best card for me? Thanks rh535 BTW: I was looking at these cards SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948 SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908
  8. I just replaced my dvd drive of 3 years ago and it has the same issue as the last. It won't read disks. Bios sees the drive as well as my computer. I hear it spin, but nothing shows up. Could it be the IDE Cable? Any thoughts? Old Drive: NEC 3450A New Drive: Lite On SOHW-832S OS: Windows 7 64 Thanks
  9. WOW. Thanks for all the info I have actually been on the forum since November 2004. A lot has changed since then. I just have been busy with school work to not even think about computer stuff. A mis-communication with my parents revealed i won't be getting the computer til mid-summer(end of June/July) anyway. I will keep all the information learned in mind while making the final decision in the summer. Look forward to bringing a more updated version of potential specs during that time. Thanks again Robert
  10. I was looking at some IPS monitors and have found a couple which i think might work HP Smart Buy ZR24w 24-inch S-IPS Widescreen LCD Monitor http://www.macmall.com/p/6110671 Dell UltraSharp U2311H 23" http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-9270&~ck=baynoteSearch&baynote_bnrank=1&baynote_irrank=0 Would these be a lot better than the ASUS i picked out? Would it be okay for gaming and Blu-Ray? (Response-Time) Also i looked at some other PSU options. I got some feedback about using OCZ as my PSU. For a little bit more i can get this SilverStone ATX12V/EPS12V 1200W 80+ Gold PFC Power Supply ST1200-G http://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-ATX12V-EPS12V-Supply-ST1200-G/dp/B004GGUATA/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3A24OCTU3LN48&colid=3PMHWEDXXGRW Any thoughts? Thanks
  11. It has been 3 years, since I built my last computer. I will try to get the same lifespan on this new rig. I have some questions about my parts list. I will also be using my Samsung monitor as my secondary monitor (Dual display for TV, watching movies while trying to do school work etc.. I will not use the Samsung to game, only my new ASUS 25’ monitor. I will be purchasing my products from Newegg and Amazon (Hopefully more Amazon for the free 2-day shipping) My purposed new rig is linked with product pages from Newegg and Amazon. Budget Range – Would like to keep under $3,000 USD. I just want to make smart decisions. Would like 5.1. I have a older set, that i might use. Any suggestions? Questions 1.) Is the extra 1.5GB worth it on the GPU front? I like to run many apps at once. I also do a good amount for ripping/encoding 2.) Since the ASUS monitor is new and I have not seen any reviews, by looking at the specs does it look like it would be good for gaming and movie watching? 3.) Will 850W be enough for this system? I would like to add another GPU around Christmas and make it an SLI rig. Also remember the 4 WD Black hard drives from current rig 4.) Is the Noctua NH-D14 complete overkill? 5.) Is Artic Silver 5 still the best stuff? 6.) Should I add a sound card? When I built my last rig, onboard sound sucked. Is it still awful? If I should add a sound card. Which one? *I might add another GPU around X-Mas (Info for space considerations on motherboard) 7.) Is the amount of RAM overkill for multi-tasking and future games and apps? 8.) Anything i might be missing? Thanks for all the help. Any advice or ideas is appreciated Robert
  12. Last week my PSU went out and my computer shut off. I swapped out the PSU and a HD which supposedly had shown S.M.A.R.T errors(Not my OS drive). i took out all the drives and only had my OS drive installed. After getting past the bios screen it just shows a blinking dash in the upper left corner. I have Windows 7 x64 ... Any ideas on how to fix this without reinstalling Windows 7? Thanks Asus P5W DH Deluxe WD Caviar Black 1TB - SATA
  13. I just tried Paragon HFS+ for windows and it made my drive show up. Unfortunately the program can only read the drives. not write. So the issue is MacDrive. Have any ideas on how to find the problem and fix it?
  14. I was doing a dual boot with hackintosh, but stopped until snow leopard comes out. I was using MacDrive 7.2.9 before and i tried using macDrive 8 and have the same problem.
