Time to upgrade? What do people think is salvagable?

So I have had my PC for around 4-5 years now and I am planning on upgrading it. Its getting too painful to have to lower settings as much as I have to these days for certain games!

as it stands my specs are essentially:

core i5 760 (Overclocked to hit 3.2Ghz under load)

AsRock P55 extreme

4gb RAM

XFX Nvidia GeForce GT 240 (buggy and artifacting from hybrid PhysX)

The reason I have some old buggy GPU in is that I have given my unlocked 6950 to my brother.

The original plan was just to buy a 970 (hadn't really decided which) and then that was all, however it then dawned on me that my old CPU might be a bottleneck, in which case I am gonna end up having to get a new mobo and CPU.

Do I need to do that? Will the old CPU be an issue? As far as I can tell its still going strong!

I am also gonna try and find some matching RAM to add some more, but that is gonna end up being a whole different game I reckon...

I really don't want to end up binning perfectly good components but realistically if I cannot play Witcher 3 on almost the highest settings I am gonna have to!

Thanks

The CPU is fine, especially if you are going to overclock it to the 3.8GHz range and won't be bottlenecking your gtx 970, or even a 980 if you robbed a granny on the way to the comp store.

Some extra ram is not bad either, 4gb is kinda on the low end of the spectrum these days so go either 8 or 16gb if you can afford it besides the GPU upgrade.

The upcoming games will be quite maxed out by your system if you only replace the GPU and upgrade you ram, if it still lags, it is a problem with the game's engine, not your system *assassins creed 3 couch couch*

+1 except the RAM isn't THAT big a deal but 8GB (total) would probably be better. I've been running 4GB on my computer and I haven't noticed any real difference between that and 8GB and I game 2560x1600 and am just running a stock clocked i7 920.

Just get the 970 and enjoy, you deserve it for being a good brother. You should have to live with that GT240 anymore haha

Cheers guys,

Just realised said bro is in hong kong for a week currently so he's gonna go on a little shopping trip for me!

yeah the RAM is pretty generic adata 1600 9-9-9-24 so i reckon it shouldn't be too hard finding something that will match it.
