700,000 Entries in a Folder!

So I was poking around and cleaning up my computer and I found 700,000 entries in a folder!!!!

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys

There was pretty much no info online about this. Does anyone have any idea how the hell this happened? There's so much that I can't even go into the folder because my computer starts to bog down like hell and crashes. This is a fresh Windows 8 install that's about 9 months old.

Already done. No solutions worked.

What "solution" are you looking for?

If you want to access or delete the files in the folder, you can always use a command prompt, which won't get bogged down by the number of files like Windows Explorer does.

Yeah, I wanted to get rid of 2 GB of useless files. I tried using command prompt but was an idiot and forgot to navigate to the right folder BEFORE typing away. Problem solved, all that crap is gone. Tried it before I posted, but I derped.

Is that all, I'm doing a data recovery for a friend of mine who had his wife restore their desktop without backing up anything, I've got ~1,000,000 files in the "unknown" folder at the moment and I've deleted well over 400,000 already.  But yeah it takes some time for windows to look at everything when you first open it. Grouping by type and collapsing the groups is helping out a fair amount here.

Good to know the machine's still playing nice without the stuff, but some of the things I read looking it up referenced malware problems as a cause.  Don't know if people were just pointing fingers or if some infection likes that folder.  Might be worth a little time to run a few malware scans to see if anything pops up just in case.

I run weekly scans with MBAM and NoD32, all clean. I think some malware just likes that folder. Also I've read that some antiviruses stop scanning that folder and skips files because there's too many files in it. I erased every single file and have had no issues. Still don't know what those files were for...
