  1. I went a bought an OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD today, very happy that I got one. But I'm having problems installing windows. I have a Windows 7 Pro upgrade disc, so I used my old windows XP setup disc (windows XP with Service pack 1a) to install XP on the SSD and upgrade to windows 7 (I did this with my HDD when I first built my computer and it had no problems). Problem is, after I install Windows XP and reboot my computer, it posts fine and all then runs the DMI pool check, but it says there's a disk read error and asks me to reboot .... WTF .... Can anyone help me with this? I hope its not an issue with the SSD cause I just got it XD. My setup is in my signature and I'm running the default BIOS that came with the mobo. Do I need to flash the BIOS or something? Also, when I used the SSD as a slave drive and looked into it, it just had the "WINDOWS" folder in it. EDIT: It says "A disk read error has occurred. Press Ctrl + Alt + del to reboot" What Ive tried so far: formatting the OCZ and installing XP installing through my normal HDD Reset my BIOS config ... Installing with just the SSD
  2. +1 to sdy284's post 5970 is also a good option if you have the money and are thinking of an ATI card, it beats the GTX480 in most tests, but can't tessellate as well. The fan is a like a jet engine at 2100RPM and full GPU load on the 5970, but it's not as bad.
  3. I generally use this rule: I go for asus and sapphire when it comes to ATI cards. Asus seems like they make the more reliable ones (based on newegg reviews) and they provide some great stuff along with their cards too (they provided 2 games, not 1, with their 5970), and sapphire is prolly 2nd best, same case as asus, maybe slightly less reliable though. I might be wrong, but that's just my opinion
  4. I've had to renew this topic, soz, the issue has reappeared
  5. Well, here's my prob. I ran a clean install on a fresh HDD with Windows Home basic and then tried to upgrade to XP pro, but that bluescreened because of some error with "PCI.SYS". So, i then installed Windows 7. But on bootup, after doing the DMI check or whatever, it asks me to select between: Previous Version, Windows 7, and Windows XP Installer. This is getting really bothersome, and I need to get rid of the Windows XP installer and previous version options and have the computer boot to windows 7 without prompting me. I've tried cancelling the install with no avail by booting from the disk, and trying to terminate the install, and I've tried changing the boot sequence, but that hasn't done any good. Theres this file in my C drive called "$WIN_NT$.~BT" which might be the install files, but if anyone knows how to fix this, it would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Arnie
  6. ive re-mouted my heatsink with AS5, temps are currently around th 80s at full load and I'm hoping that goes down over the break in period. I've left the CPU voltage at auto ATM
  7. what would be a good voltage? hypothetically? I checked my heatsink and it seems the thermal paste didn't spread itself evenly. I'm gonna get some artic 5 and re-do it XD
  8. I'm having a similar problem with my 920 but with the stock heatsink. I ran prime95 for 15 mins and the temps (using coreTemp) on the cores ranged from a min of 72 to a max of 100 XD. I'm gonna re-mount the heatsink when I get home and my mum stops drooling at the speed of my machine, lol (she's been using a 6 y.o. Dell which is still running a celeron and ddr1). I guess I'll be watching this thread carefully. But any recommendations for a good heatsink except the noctua?
  9. Sweet, thanks. BTW, a little change is that since i'm not doing any OC'ing, i'm not bothering with the noctua just yet, or the sound card just yet either. Also, I'm gonna change my graphics card selection to the 5970 . I'm gonna be a little over budget, but i think having the 5970 is gonna be worth it
  10. Thanks, My mum wants a desktop though cause she hates laptops, lol. Do you know what I would need to setup the server/dumb terminal config?
  11. Thanks for the tip, however, my main concern with them is whether everything will work well together without any issues and if there are any better parts for the same budget (eg. the HyperX, and if I've got the right amount of pins for the Mobo), but still EX58 for the Mobo. For price, I'm already about $150 under budget, so that's fine for my primary rig, I can get a disk drive and some peripherals fairly cheap for that $150 (Razer Lycrosa, CM Sentinel Storm Advanced, and can't remember disk drive atm). Main concerns are the server/dumb terminal setup cause my mum REALLY wants a better setup XD.
  12. Hi all, here's my planned rig. Its for about $2,000 (AUD) and I plan to build it around March 2010. Its gonna be for gaming, as well as university work (graphics and web design, programming, networks administration, etc). The only things I'm concerned about atm are the motherboard, RAM, and PSU. Plus my mum proposed something else to do with the rig (detailed below). Can i get your opinions on the rig and any improvements i could make for it please, and if anyone knows how, the suggestion at the bottom. (newegg links at part names) CPU: Intel Core i7-920 CPU Cooling: Noctua NH-U12P Motherboard: Gigabyte EX-58 UD3R Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon 5870 HD Vapor-x (x2 in crossfire later) HDD: Samsung EcoGreen F2 (1.5TB) RAM: Kingston HyperX 6GB (3x2GB, 240pin 2000MHz with fan cooling kit) CPU Case: Coolermaster HAF922 PSU: Coolermaster UCP Series RS900 Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Series Pro (can't find link atm) Monitor: Acer X213hbid My mum currently uses a 4 y.o desktop PC by dell and its very slow, which she is getting really fed up with. So she was thinking of having a single server housed in my study, and have 2 dumb terminals which me and my mum could use to access the server from the study and my room (which is about 10-15m away from the study). Most of the time, my mum just uses her computer to surf the net and I will be working on University work, and there might be some overlap in the time I use for playing games and her use. I can spend maybe another $1,000 (AUD) on this and I'm hoping to keep most of the same hardware from my planned rig, but how plausible is this and what would I need to do to make this possible. Thanks in advance, ArnieF4440
  13. I have the same issue with my old tecra M2, standby and hibernate don't work. I'll be interested to see if anyone has a solution for this. I didn't damage my laptop in anyway though XD Arnie~
  14. Sennheiser earphones are great, I had them with my iRiver a while back, they've got great bass and they last quite a while (lasted me about 2 years without fail). You can find the models here (to your preference): http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_...vate_headphones , but I'm not 100% sure where you can get them though Arnie~
  15. yeah, they're selling it a lot cheaper than what I've seen XD. I'm gonna wait for a little while before buying it, hopefully the prices will drop around christmas, I'm prolly gonna have to get it shipped through some of my relatives in the US, don't think newegg sends it to australia XD Arnie~
