I had a friend with this problem(similar) he said he solved it by not skrewing the card in and just letting it sit...really wierd but it worked.

I've now reinstalled the NIC without success, I'll try using system restore. I keep on having the feeling that I must be doing something small and stupid but I did get it working on another comp in like 2 minutes...I guess that assures me but doesn't really help. Maybe I should just buy a WAP/Router and run NAT inisde the network, have 2 LAN's, its sloppy and its overkill but it would probably work. It's too bad the DWL 520+ isn't supported with knoppix. I miss my old Dell mobile card with a hacked firmware so that it would run like an orinoco gold. ah the good 'ol days.

So I recently came crawling back to OCC to get some tech-help, nothing personal, I just haven't touched a computer in a really really long time. As I waited(and by that I mean worked all day and glanced to see if someone had responded a few times) I was kinda frustrated that no one had posted. I should have realized that its like 6 am for most OCC members. The thought ran through my head that I had helped alot of people and now when I needed help no one was there for me. I didn't entertain it, but I looked on my last 10 posts. As it turns out the majority of them were me asking for help. So I'm a bit humbled and I wanted to thank everyone out there in OCC land for all thier help, for being funny and understanding. It's been a long time since I've posted, I've barley touched a computer for almost 2 years and moved to France. Long story short I'm working in an office now and have been encountering strange annoying problems with the wireless network. Someone asked me a few weeks ago if I could get one of the computers up on wireless, normally not very hard. So I installed a D-link GWL 520+, installed the XP drivers(OS=Windows XP SP2), semmed successful. I then brought up the adapter properties, put in the WEP key, set it to shared, blah blah. Normal installation. I finshed clicked okay and windows sent out a dhcp broadcast. I waited a minute and then it said that it couldn't get an address. Strange... I verfied my WAP settings and my router settings, WAP is set to run a bit like a hub, the router is setup to give addresses(normal dhcp w/NAT setup). I went back to the computer and lo-and behold it had found an address. Ipconfig shows that all the information is correct, (ip address, subnet, gateway, dns server) all the addresses match the other computer's config(except the ip...for obvious reasons) so I figured I had won, I tried to ping the gateway and no go. Strange, I have addresses, windows says I'm connected. Try to ping around, in the network outside the network etc. Nothing. Then the connection drops, comes back up, says no address can be obtained and then gets one after a minute anyway and I can't connect. So there's the problem, the solutions I've tried include but are not limited to: -re-doing configuration process(everything but reinstalling the drivers) -checked the WAP to make sure that MAC address filtering was turned off, got frustrated and spoofed the mac address from another wireless computer on the network and turned that computer off(to insure no conflicts) with no success. -installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers and ran windows update -Tried diffrent settings in the NIC properties(shared vs open, manually setting all address vs DHCP, set key vs key automatically obtained) -Verified that I could have a wired connection by getting a really really long network cable and plugging it in. -verified WEP key several times, thought maybe I was making a mistake so I disabled WEP alltogether on the WAP and tried connecting without encryption without success(same problem) -verfied that there wasn't interference using netstumbler, I have very little interference. -Disabled windows firewall aswell as all other firewalls they had installed -rebooted -Thought there might be a problem with the NIC so I put it on another computer and installed it on the secure network in <2mins. -Loaded up knoppix STD to see if I could get it up that way, unfortunatly I didn't find support for my card, I heard knoppix auditor supports it so I may try that a bit later Here are my remaning idea's: -Try a diffrent OS(knoppix auditor) or maybe mandrake if I get around to partitioning the hdd -Try a diffrent NIC, I have one and haven't had time to try it yet -Reinstall current NIC There you have it, I kinda feel like I've tried everything(except those 3 things which have little hope of success) So just to recap, I'm connected to the WAP, but can't ping anything even though DHCP gives me an address sometimes I can ping the WAP and I can always ping myself(thats generally true under any circomstance) Any help or any idea's anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. We cant get the sound to work. Everything is configured properly, the bios is set to enable the mobo sound, XP pro has the latest sound drivers, the device appears installed correctly, the volume is up, nothing is muted, speakers are plugged in correctly. We tried pluggin in speakers and headphones to see if maybe that was the problem but no dice. Im thinking its bad onboard sound or somthing since nothing else seems to fit. Anyone got any ideas?

I settled for just turning off the powersupply from now on... Ive had this happen before but nothing negative happened, everything worked fine.

Okay I umm..obtained a geforce 4 ti 4200, I was previously using a Geforce 4mx 420. So popped in the card, reinstalled nvidia drivers and thought I was done. I started up call of duty for a little more graphicly intensive action. After being in the game for about 3-4 seconds the screen froze. I could still hear sounds and stuff (not looping ones) and then after like 6 second the screen changed to the frame that it was suppose to be at and freeze again. I hit esc and quit the game. I cant play any video games on the new card for some reason!! Ice tried uninstalling/reinstalling, making sure the connectors are clean, reinstalling my motherboard drivers. Now, if anyone has a gigabyteboard(I dont know if other boards do this) then somtimes when you stick in a new piece of hardware teh computer turns on. That happened when I first stuck in the 4200 and it also flipped my FSB switches on my mobo. I have a GA-7VA and a 2500+ barton. So, it flipped the fsb from 333 to 266, I just flipped it back and it seems to work fine. So, anyone have any clues or ideas?

I built this computer for a guy a while back. He called me up and said he was having trouble with it so could I take a look. I said sure. When he booted it up it would keep resetting the video, so the monitor woudl turn on and off again. Almost every single time he did anything. I figured it was a bad driver so I updated it and then it happened more!! So i said skrew it and reinstalled xp, and after updating the video driver it heppened again! So I figure its just the video card, I pull it out and put in a new one, a pci card that sucks really bad and it does it with that one!! I put in a diffrent one and so far it hasnt done it but it has been incapable of bringing to a high resolution. Usually when i have problems that seem to be demonic in nature its the motherboard...crap gigabyte, they suck, dont buy from them. Anyway, anyone have any ideas?

I dont know where this problem is from but its aggrevation to me is impossible to weigh. When Im surf'in the web I always use the scroll whell on my mouse to go down teh page and what not. Well quite randomly, it will start to go back and forward by the scroll wheel. Its really annoying and it will randomly do it for like 10 minutes and stop. anyone? any ideas?

what questions you ask First off, when overclocking generally we change the FSB. Hopefully your bios has an option that will let you change it manually. Heres the steps, go into the bios, find the place to change it and then turn it up by the smallest increment possible. Reboot and check your temps, if they are under...for me Id say 50C then load up the OS and have it do somthing cpu intensive for a few minutes and then check temps again. If its still under 50 the process until you've put your temp past 50 and take a step back. If your bios doesnt offer an option there are a number of programs that will do these things for you, try googling it (its 1:20 and I ahve work in 9 hours so I dont feel like searching for you) As for your next question as to what the BEST Quietist HSF is the coldest and quiestist would be a water cooled sytem. Do you have a hundred bucks? If not you're gonna have to go with some air cooling. Check out the SLK series, the SLK-800, SLK-900 are some pretty sweet sink's, then get a fan for 'em. I like the Smart case fan 2 from thermal take because it has the adjustable fan control and at max it shoots somthing like 72 CFM. Its not the quietest though. What you may notice is that if you get a loud fan and leave your computer running for a few days you wont even notice the noise anymore and if anything it helps you sleep. good luck.

yes, real player is the devil. I dont know of any programs that will play rm but I know there are some that will convert rm's. Try googling it.

My first question is why are you using internet connection sharing when you have a router? Does it not have more then 1 port on it? Internet connection sharing via windows is pretty inefficent and will make your machine run slower as well as your internet connection so the best option would be to have both machines plugging into the router. One possibility possibilty is that the other machine isnt using DHCP, to do this in XP goto start, control panel, internet options, Connections, LAN settings, and check the box that is auto-detect settings. If the other machine isnt XP say what OS its running and Illl tell you how to check.
