Thermal Paste for Laptop

As everybody knows over the last month or so my laptop has been running hot. So everyone has suggested reapplying my thermal paste. I will be ordering it in a couple of days. Is there a particular brand thats works better than others with laptops or will anyone do just like with desktops. Also would a dried out lysol wipe make a good cloth for cleaning with the Articlean Thermal paste remover? Also antbody have an opnion on the best hard drive for a laptop hat doesnt support AHCI and SSD's. I have been thinking of a WD black the 7200 rpm

Last I heard, the best thermal compound on the market was Arctic Silver. I've still got a tube at home that I've had for a couple of years, and it always seems to make a pretty big difference over stock if I'm replacing something. Honestly, the fact that you are getting in there and cleaning the laptop out at all makes a bigger difference than the kind of paste you use.

 

As for cleaning the old gunk off, just use a non-shedding cloth or towel and isopropyl rubbing alcohol. You just want to be sure you aren't leaving little bits of paper or cloth on the surface of the CPU before you put the paste on. 

 

For an older laptop, a WD Black would be a decent upgrade. Bear in mind that an SSD is still "supported" so long as the laptop uses SATA. Some of the newer features/speeds may not be enabled but it will still function faster than a mechanical HDD.

I use new coffee filters and thermal paste remover. Your dried out Lysol wipe may leave chemical residue on the CPU, don't use that.

 

Arctic Silver is good, I have a few tubes of that. Been using it for years.

I have also just started using GELID GC Extreme and it's premium stuff,....much better IMHO.

AS5 is not the best out there, but it is very good and relatively cheap. It's a good value at the very least, and you probably won't notice much of a difference with higher end TIM, especially since it's just a laptop.

My one recommendation would be grab a tube of TIM that is non conductive. Just means that if you were to get a bit to excited with it you aren't going to fry things. Other than that when properly applied you're only looking at fractions of a degree difference between different brands. Unless you start using things like indigo extreme etc.

Ok so basically any thermal paste will do dont use the wipes because they may have lysol left on them heres the thing personal opnion guys would a samsung evo be worth the investment if hp has modified my comp to not AHCI it is sata 3

Yes the evo would give you a major speed difference as well as be easier on your battery life .

According to hp my Pavillion g7 2240-us lab rat which is bullshit because HM76 chipset does but for some reason they altered the bios

Just be careful not to get any on the pcb or anything it is conductive. Arctic Silver Ceramique would have probably been a better choice for a laptop. I wish OCZ still made their tim it was just as good as AS5 but didn't require a break in period and wasn't conductive.

+1 I think I have some Tuniq TX-3 and I used OCZ Freeze before that but I do have a tube of AS5 somewhere too...but I don't know why everyone always has to compare other thermal compounds to AS5, it's the worst in everyway lol.

 

Not even the best performance, long settle in time and it's conductive...
