Game of Thrones

So the season two finale was last night. It was fairly uneventful. I don't think I have seen a thread on here for Game of Thrones. I can say this. I am reading the books trying to catch up to the show but it isn't easy. There are 4 books with a 5th that just came out not that long ago.

All i can say is if you haven't read them you should. If you aren't an avid reader you might struggle since they are aout 800 pages each but they are really good IMO.

I'm not much of reader myself but a 100 pages a night goes pretty quick.

I originally read the books when they came out, and told my brother to read Game of Thrones afterwards, saying it was pretty good. When Season 1 came out, I only read to Book 3 a couple years before it did, and never read Book 4. I decided to re-read all the books starting from Book 1 after Season 1 ended, and finished Book 5 a while ago (all while commuting on subway, so basically an hour of reading a day).

Season 1 - Did a good job on following the book. Left a few minor characters out, and only a few scenes that were changed.

Season 2 - They should have split this into 2 seasons. There's too much detail that they ended up omitting completely, and doesn't help with character development for characters that become more important later on in the series. There's a lot of changes and even some deviations from the books in Season 2 that I didn't like. They really changed the pace of Book 2 in Season 2, and that's why it seems uneventful.

If they do Season 3 like they did Season 2, I may start not liking the series. Books 1 - 3 are by far the best. Book 4 and 5 were supposed to be in one book, but George RR Martin decided to separate them into two different books because of the sheer volume, but they share the same timeline, except Book 5 goes a little further than Book 4. Hopefully they follow the timeline more than making each Book into a Season.

It sucks after watching an episode in Season 2. I grab Book 2 and go, "I was right, that didn't happen in the book. Why cut that out?"

I just hope they get more in. I know the production value of this series is high and probably costs HBO a ton of money. Ten one hour episodes isn't enough for this show. I guess I can compare it to LOTR. Three books in three 4 hour movies. Lots of ommissions that were very important. Awesome movies but the books were much better.

I love the show and the books. I actually read the books after seeing the first season last year, and when i rewatched the first season before season 2, it was even better.

But i feel the same way about Season 2, it was good, just not as good as season 1. Specifically I didnt like how they deviated from the viewpoint characters, the books do a great job alluding to what happens "off scene," and by not really coming out and saying what happens, adds a mystery factor to the story that keeps the reader guessing. (I'm specifically thinking of the Stannis/Melisandre scenes from the show, as neither of them were viewpoint chars in book 2)

However I thought they ended the season well.

With Dany burning down the House of the Undying and the beginning of the assault on the Fist of the First Men.

I'm a big fan of this show. I even bought all the books after the first season and it only took me a few months to read all of them. So many pages. The first season was much closer to the books than the second, but I don't think that it is necessarily a negative thing.

Season one ended with a lot of stuff answered IMO. Season 2 it felt like they were just like, screw it lets cut it here. They should have split it in 2, I haven't read the books but I know there is a lot missing here.

Book 3 is supposed to be Season 3 and 4, so 20 episodes should be good for the book right?

Also, for the people who read the book, does the Uncle ever appear again or is he gone?(Don't tell me where he is, just if he is even mentioned again :D)

He's mentioned more, but his fate is still uncertain.

However, my friends and I have a theory.

We think Benjen Stark is Coldhands.

Bought the 4 book box set during season one. It sat on my desk for a few months. Finally got around to reading them and finished the fifth book a few months ago.

Season one was great. Season two not so much. They left out a lot of things or could have done things better. Some things they just moved to season three.

I honestly don't think most of the non-book readers even knew that armor was Renly's in the Blackwater Bay battle. They should have made it more obvious by having Stannis or one of the Stormlords yell it .

Season three for book readers

A few of the missing characters from season two are going to be in season three like the Reeds, Beric, and etc.

Is it worth it?

Worth more than watching it based on how season two went.
