Need Help Choosing New PSU

Recommended Posts

Hi there OverclockersClub forum users....

I am just finishing buying all the parts for a new PC and I have a problem with coosing the PSU.

My new system is going to be a i7-920 overclocked 24/7 to a (hopefully) stable 3.8 Ghz on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Rev 2.0 Motherboard with 12 gb of XMS3 memory (2gbX6) at 1600 Mhz (hopefully), plus either a Gigabyte GTX470 SOC or a soon to be released GTX 570 graphics card, an Intel 80gb SSD and 4 Samsung 1Tb HDDs and an option to have 2 SSDs and 10 HDDs running on the machine, 4-5 case fans, two CPU heatsink fans and maybe a RAID PCIe card.

My first thought was to get a 1000W PSU to be comfortable with but I can't find a good model in that class where I live....

I am now trying to choose either the Corsair AX850 which I fear might not give me at least the 5 years of total stability I seek and the Corsair AX1200 which I fear is a little too much for my needs and I have read and heard that the first batch had a fault that made the PSU make a really annoying sound and I can't be sure I won't have to play the exchange game for three months with it...

What should I do? Is a 850W PSU enough or should I overshoot with the 1200W psu which might be faulty and need exchanging?

Thanks for your time and responses....

Where do you live?

The AX850W would be a solid choice and would easily run two high end graphics cards plus all the extra hardware. If you feel you need a little more power the HX1000W is great unit if it's available.

Make sure your case is big enough to take the HX1000W or the AX1200W because they are a little longer than the average ATX unit.

thanks for the response paulktreg.... If it was a little cheaper I would have gotten the HX1000 or an Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050w but their price here is too close to the AX1200 and they are older models so I ruled them out of the pick....

EDIT: PS - I am getting a full tower case so Ill have no problem with space...

The AX1200W it is then, you can never have too many amps!

I would say the 1200 since it seems to be the best deal(costing just a little bit more than the 1000 correct?). My reason for this is because it allows you to overclock however much you want without being afraid of the PSU not giving you enough power. Also, you will probably never have to get a new PSU again if you go with the 1200.

Thanks Krieg1337 for your response...... I do want at least a 1000w PSU but I also want to get the best value out of my buy....

Maybe if I write down the prices I am able to get here it will be simpler to decide or give advice:

AX1200 - 400$

HX1000 or Enermax 1050W - 360$

AX850 - 280$

If anyone thinks I'm wrong for thinking 40$ is a small price to pay for 200W more (than a 1000W PSU) on a PSU or if the price difference from the 850W to 1200W is so unjustifiable that I should just *shut up* (*=EDITED) and get a 850W PSU and call it a day - tell me so :)

Thanks again for the kind help and responses.....

EDITED - I have edited myself disrespecting myself - sorry for the "bad language" :)

thought so too with my HAF 932 - not the case should've bought a modular one.

I didn't cuz I read nonmodulars are more effective, tho I suspect it isn't really a factor.

another thing I found is it's supposedly better to have a 80mm vertical fan as opposed to a 120+mm horizontal because of internal minutuarization (my granddad always taught me minituarization can lead to problems) altho again with all the new tech gear minituarization really isn't a problem.

cable management is a female dog tho. I got so many cables, the case door is crunching on them when I close it.

P.S. I have a 1000w P&C silencer

Alright....... Thanks for your help guys..... I have a feeling I'll be going with the AX1200 despite the minor problems that it may bring...... Hope I get a good one.......

Thanks for the post Crawlerz246 :) ..... I have considered a PSU with a side mounted 80mm fan but I only have the Antec Quattro 1000w model here and while i'm sure it's a good model it isn't a new model and it costs 50$ less than the AX1200 so I think i'll be going for that one......
