2015 Upgrade?

So I havn't been keeping up with the recent advances in CPUs and SSDs. I like to upgrade around this time of year and I was curious if there is any available upgrades that anyone would recommend? Although my current system has not been showing much signs of slowing down. Although I am concerned that my chip set is getting out of date. Below are some parts I am looking to upgrade, if you have any suggestions let me know. Budget is around $1500.

CPU - Intel Xeon W3670 (i7-970) to ???

SSD - upgrade to ???

You'll have a tough time finding a reasonably priced improvement over a gulftown...maybe overclock it higher?

Are you running low on space on your SSD? because once you have an SSD, you won't really see any noticeable difference with a "faster" one unless you like having bigger bar graphs lol

Lol yeah, sounds like it. I'd still have my 920 if it wasn't for my memory causing me to upgrade from it...only to find out it was the damn memory that was bad, not my motherboard or CPU :(

Don't be me, love your socket 1366 machine! (especially with that delicious gulftown)

You really don't need an upgrade. What do you have your W3670 overclocked to? A used i7-980 I bought for cheap at 4.2GHz is still pretty good, and I still have it around (I refuse to sell it). I wouldn't warrant any upgrade over that.

Most SSD's these days are a mixed bag. Samsung and Crucial have gone more towards mainstream TLC-based NAND, which I think is fine since by the time it might run out of writes (like in 10 to 20 years), you'll probably get a 4TB SSD by then for the same price you buy a 480GB one now. :P

Having ran the upgrade path from X58 to Z68 to Z77, I can tell you that there wasn't enough difference to have justified the money I spent on those "upgrades".  My decision making processes were flawed  :)  I thought I couldn't live without PCIe 3.0,  and the native USB3.0, SATA 6Gb/s etc. but in reality there just wasn't that large of a difference in the way the platforms performed on a day to day basis.

I know that benchmarks say otherwise, but I'm talking about in real world use.  And I was only using the i7 950 when I ditched the X58 platform.

Exactly the info I was looking for! Thanks!

I still use a 920 on the x58 platform that does well even thought the chip is a dog. The wife runs a 980x with 12GB of memory as well although I think either the board puked, the card puked or the 3TB storage drive took a dump. Will be looking at that one tomorrow.

The X58 platform while aged is still solid. As far as feel goes Z97 or X99 with a decent SSD feel snappier than my X58 rig does. How that relates to your usage model may differ from what my usage is but needless to say I stuck with X79 for my gaming rig due to the higher PCIE lane count offered rather than moving to Z97.

Yeah, that's humorously the best justification I have for my new system. Native USB 3.0! (had just two ports with an add-in card on my X58)

But yeah, since I got my 920 system from you, I guess we both abandoned your 1366 systems :P
