Hard Drive Warranty

Is there any form of warranty I can get on a new hard drive that would guarantee a new drive instead of a refurbished one in the case of mechanical failure?

Not that I know of. Refurbished drives tend to be pretty darn reliable though...

hmm sometimes companies will allow you to pay for a exta warranty but that seems a waste of money since doing the RMA yourself is painless for the most part. Plus unless you past 3-5 years (depending) there isn't a need for the extra warranty.

I'm just extremely wary of any "refurbished" drive. Out of the two I've gotten from Seagate, one lasted 6 months and the other lasted a year.

WD Black Series carries the highest available warranty protection on the market, a 5-year limited warranty. And you can add Data Recovery Service up to 3-years.

I'd dare say sometimes refurbished can be BETTER than new if the batch of new drives bears some kind of defect that, when serviced, tested and re-released as refurbished...gets corrected.

 

You'd know what I'm talking about if you had a 7200.11 Seagate, I know because I still have two of them going strong today.

I just replace my HDDs every 3 years, never had a failure, never had to worry about refubs.
