Looking for a new TV, trying to stay fairly basic.

Looking to buy a new TV for my apartment. I'm going to college right now, so I don't want something super nice in case it either gets stolen or broken at a party. Walmart is having some really amazing deals in my area. I'm looking for anything between 40-50", but I'd say given my room size 46" is probably the sweet spot. I do not need a smart TV as I have a spare computer hooked up on SteamBox/XBMC duty. Here's what I'm looking at, what do you think?

Go to Best Buy every couple days and ask to see their open box tv's. You can get a 120 hz 50" for that price.

As Onion stated though, look for open box or refurbished TVs for some great deals. As long as you are not looking for exceptional sound quality, which is something that a lot of off brand TVs fail at, you should be alright.

Since we're weighing in on brands as well, I'll add that I've had great luck with the 52" Samsung I've picked out for the family. Had it for about 4 years.

That's the same thing I was trying to convince myself when showing my parents the television for their living room. The sound quality got knocked though, and who knows about a warranty claim, lol. But for the money, you can hardly beat that. Buy a soundbar and you're good to go as long as its not DOA.

I actually really like that suggestion. I have no qualms buying open box. It's been so long since I've been in the market to buy something in a brick-and-mortar kind of store that I forgot you could do that...

 

The Changhong looks amazing, but I'm a little nervous about having something like that shipped to my apartment and left on my doorstep. That's the main reason I've been looking at BB and Walmart. Sadly finances won't line up for me until the end of the week so I think I'll miss it regardless.

I dont worry about the speakers on the TV when running surround. The two I watch most have a surround setup and a sound bar with a wireless sub.

Pro tip: Have a manager come out, you'll be able to haggle a bit on the price of the TV at Best Buy. Even cooler, you still get a 14 day return policy with full money back, and the full warranty from the manufacturer.

I've had great luck with Samsung and Toshiba. We have a Toshiba 40" downstairs, it's been kicking for around two years. I have a Samsung 32" that was used in a bedroom for around six years. Sharp and Panasonic make some of the best televisions to my mind, but they cost quite a bit more.
