Pteroduck Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) So a friend recently asked me to build his pc for him, butttt, dun dun dun, I can't boot. Everything in the system is new except his HDD's and RAM. I can boot from a USB to my Linux mint, but I can't boot from his ssd. Any ideas? I really don't want to back up and restore. Or is there a way to back up and restore everything he had as is? IE, partitions, installations, etc etc edit: I forgot to mention that I think it's a corrupt windows 7 drive or something like that. It will go past the POST screen but wont even get to the w7 logo. It goes into a reboot loop. SpikeSoprano Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Some kind of a parts list would be nice ?
ir_cow Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 sounds like you changed the settings from IDE, ACHI or Raid in the bios. I've had the same thing happen before. If that is the problem set it back to whatever it was, than boot into windows and install the drivers for the new settings. It's farily easy to switch from IDE to ACHI, but raid usually requires a reinstall (personally, I couldn't get raid drivers to work this way). Waco Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 What chipset to what chipset?
Pteroduck Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 @waco z77 to z97 if I'm not mistaken. @HBC its not raided at all, just regular drives. The mono is at stock so I'd assume I wouldn't have to change and ide to achi but I'll check when I get to his place today @spike sorry mate, forgot that. Pteroduck Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 (edited) It was already achi but switching to ide didn't help either. I also swapped back and forth. He's got the Asus z97m+ board here Edit: we tried his laptop hard drive and it worked. Kapoot hard drive/corrupt ssd? Pteroduck Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Did you try the ssd in his laptop, should at least show up if it's not faulty ? Sorry, but I forgot to mention its a good SSD. It came from his other PC. We just tested it in a laptop to make sure before we started.
SpikeSoprano Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 You could try using a different sata port on the mb, it's worth a try.
