  1. My friend just replaced his old laptop with a newer Refurbed Dell... His old Toshiba Satellite laptop (about 3 years old) died and the only useable thing off of it is the monitor. Can it be possible to mount this screen to the window of my Antec Super LANBOY, rewire it, hook it up to my on-board video and use it to travel? I have heard that I would need a specific graphics adapter that would've been built into the laptop, but I assume that if you could mount the screen from a PSX, than you could mount an older laptop screen. Any suggestions?
  2. I got a little box to kick around with from a friend which I have been tinkering with for the past few weeks now. I tried installing a version of Linux on it (SUSE 9.1 Personal) and YaST wouldn't start up because of lack of memory... I dug around my room for a while and HOORAY i found a 256MB stick of PC100 SDRAM. I installed it into an open bay. I powered it up and it ran wonderfully (I didn't know the board's limitations at the time and didn't know if that was asking too much to run that much... Form my understandings and looking at the POST of the motherboard, I believe it already had a 128 MB stick in it already... and when I finally got my ****** monitor working (had to bend pins back correctly...) It told me I was running 192 MB... WHY ME? I have about 320 or 384MB of RAM installed and it was only detecting part of it. In the main slot is the 64MB (or 128MB) stick and in the second slot is the 256MB stick. I recently flashed the P12 BIOS so I shouldn't have a problem (whenever I acquire someone's old PC, I flash the new BIOS)... Avoiding the inevitable... should I switch the sticks of memory so that the 256 is the first stick and then the 64 or 128 stick to be in the second slot? I wanted to get this computer to my girlfriend to use for her school work until she can afford another machine. Any help is graciously accepted!
  3. I hadn't been able to find an extention cable for the thermal sensor that comes with the Thermaltake Smart Case Fan II. It has skinny wires that fit between the pins of the processor so I can mount it "under" the die on the bottom... That would've given me the best reading... UNFORTUNATELY... haven't found one in a retail store, therefore I had to ghetto rig a thermal sensor on the side of the heatsink using electrical tape.... It has since fallen off and that temp ended up being ambient. My computer NOW doesn't work... I switched out the rear 80mm Smart Case Fan II with a 92mm Papst fan. I removed the Tt fan for placement on my new HSF coming in the mail. With everything running... appeared to be running smoothly... I went to bed happy that it was working... I woke up and it was silent. It wouldn't turn on. The PS in my case at the time when the power button was pressed, the blue fan on the side glowed blue, fan spun (all this for about 1/2 second) and stopped. Flipped switch on back of PS to turn it off.. turned it back on a minute later... Same thing. Switched out power supply to test to see what was working... Got out my Antec TruePower 300W PS. Nothing. Was I running too much stuff? Now nothing will power up at all... Every necessary plug is firmly seated and PS is ON and plugged in.
  4. No I didn't use any primer. It is model paint. I assume it would stick to almost any type of plastic. Especially drive bezels. The plastic is very similar to airplane model plastic. I didn't have the money when buying the paint. I also recently ordered a new HSF from eBay! it looks nice... though relatively cheap... It looks nice. I will be replacing its "weak" fan with my Thermaltake Smart Case Fan II for MORE COOLING POWER!!!... the link to this auction is here... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=6732357236 There are PLEANTY of them left... I will review this HSF and let you guys know how it works out. I see lots of ridges... I plan on doing lapping on the surface to make it shinier!
  5. For the hole... I made the Markings with a permanent marker around the fan... got a blank CD and drew around that.... then measured and made the center hole for kicks.... took the fan grille and put it down and marked the holes. I then used an awl had it sharpened and "punched holes" so I could get grip with my grandpa's new DeWalt 18V Cordless drill. That thing is Bada$$!! after drilling those holes... my grandfather used a hand grinder (see the "action shot" in my MSN group - picture named CompMod04_00017.jpg after he was done with that.. he went and took a nap. I then finished off the grinding to polish off some of the remainders and still wished I rented or borrowed a big hole saw.. The silver paint I used for the bezels was that awesome TESTORS model paint metallic silver. Under $4.00 after tax in Minnesota. The fact that the paint is chipping sucks... Can ANYONE recommend a good clearcoat that I can apply to my painted metal parts? I have touch-ups I need to do anyway. Need to spend NO MORE THAN $9! The CD drive bezel painting was EASY!!! Directron.com has a wonderful tutorial. I wish the mod was "cleaner"... but it was better than even I had expected!
  6. My Modded box.... I GOT IT DONE.... no cutting torch :-( check out the process here... http://groups.msn.com/rageagainstcomputer/...dchristmas.msnw What do you think?!?
  7. Has anyone used the "Rotozip" tool? It's supposed to be the aweosme tool everyone should have...
  8. I have been running a solid 60*C for a while and now down to 52*C I need more airflow and came up with the idea to put a large 120mm on the side.. Preferably the 120mm Silverstone. Like the specs and reviews... I talked to my grandfather when I went to visit them at the farm. I told him I wanted to cut holes out of my computer casing.... I am probably gonna melt something.... My grandpa... knows NOTHING about computers offers to help with mods... I LOVE GRANDPARENTS!!! My grandpa and i love to burn things. ALL COMPONENTS AND FRONT FASCIA are being removed prior to operation Should I test my cutting on a different computer casing prior to melting mine? B) Who wants to see pictures?!? If you guys are lucky... I'll even video the results of the case mods and let you guys see it being cut and anything else that may happen.
  9. I got the Antec Refrence Silver Compound from Best Buy 2 years ago. So... a nice thin coating to cover the CPU. On another note... looking for a nice HSF to replace my mediocre TT HSF. Want something with a copper core and aluminum fins with a 80x80x25 fan mounted on it... can't spend too much... less than $40. Carved fins, not soldered fins.... Any suggestions?
  10. If you are using lots of peripherals, you gotta get a PS that you can expand with. Just like when the school system in the US has to expand a school, they build for the students NOW, not for future growth... A PS is your backbone... Aim for more available wattage. I have a Rhycom (?) 450 Watt power supply that is absolutely awesome. This may be what you are looking for... Silent TT-520SS 520W ATX PS This SHOULD take whatever you throw at it. 2 fans to keep it and assist in keeping your system cool as well. May be stretching it, but it has the goods, the good looks and that fan you wanted. Is 4-color LED fan okay? ALWAYS aim for more power than you need. You'll appreciate having the extra power later for other stuff that drains power.
  11. I got an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and it runs fairly hot. I got it up to 65* right now. How much silver compound should I use and how thick of a coating? I don't want to waste it and/or fry stuff with too much thermal silver. Suggestions, previous threads, ANYTHING! Thanks to everybody for their help!
  12. I got 2 Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 2 fans... I like them alot. LOTS OF AIRFLOW and not much louder than a fridge starting up its compressor and fan. Its all controlled by a Kingwin Thermal Center and when it gets hot, the fans get REALLY LOUD My recommendation for your case cooling is to get a nice AUTOMATIC thermal controller for some piece of mind along with a few speed controllable fans. Some thermal sensors and the control wires are easy to install and its nice to have the computer know how fast to spin the fans. If you manually control it wrong, you COULD do some damage to your computer. I heard good things about SilverStone's fans as well.. They got some nice white speed controlled fans ... some 80mm and a nice big 120mm. Dual ball bearing for longer life. Good luck dude!
  13. Can't I just drill some holes on either side of my optical drives and screw the cover over? I am sure that it would fit, it's just a matter of modification. Here's the link to my case... http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=91600 sorry... copy and paste... Even if I cut the sides of this universal cover and drill my own holes, I should be able to make it work. Void the warranty!!!
  14. I want to get those kick butt stealth drive covers from a Lian Li casing and put them in my antec solutions SLK-1600 beige case. Also to spraypaint the face of my floppy drive silver, OR obtain a new front for it and paint the rest of the body of the computer a nice blue color. I know that these stealth covers have to be screwed on, Do you think I can pull this one off without too much effort? Want to simplify the look of my case, yet add a "sexy" appeal to it. I know it "only fits the Lian Li blah blah blah blah can i drill holes into my case that correctly align with the holes on the "cover" and recess my drive slightly so that everything can work well together? I am willing to remove the ulgy beige pieces to make everything mesh well together. To see what I see... click here.... Lian Li 5.25" Universal Drive Cover
  15. VERY HELPFUL!!! Being frustrated with myself.... Why didn't I remember that?!? This post has been edited... I reseated my HSF and my heatsink temp is at 53*C and my CPU temp according to MBM is 56*C, dropped from 57 (HS temp) from a while ago. I got a thermal sensor attatched to the side of my heatsink.. to get a more accurate reading, can I attach the sensor to the underside of the "contact plane" (where the heatsink makes contact with the processor) without it burning up? I also got one of those nice copper shims that help redirect heat that came with my mobo bundle. I put some silver compound on that as well. My voltage according to MBM Core0 is 1.66V . This is irritating me. __________________________ Update: November 15, 2004 It runs @ 50*C at idle and when Installing Xandros Desktop 2.0, it got to a max of 61*C Much better, I'd say! what do you think about the 120 mm fan on the side to assist with the hot air the CPU blows out? My girlfriend also agreed to assist my cooling needs by supplying me with a copper heatsink and an additional Thermaltake Smart Case Fan II. Suggestion on a decent copper heatsink with an 80mm fan mounting standard? Want to only spend about $45 at the most on the new HSF. I heard the Thermalright (?) HS is good. Is the Thermaltake SCF2 able to be plugged into the mainboard w/o problems?
