I guess I got moved, sorry to post in the wrong forum. I will probably keep my current pc as is, as a backup or second computer for visitors. This is the list I am starting with. NZTX H630 ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO I7 4790K G-SKILL TRIDENT X 16G ASUS DIRECTCU II OC R9290 SAMSUNG 840 EVO 750GB WD 2002FAEX 2TB CORSAIR HX1050 80PLUS GOLD COOLERMASTER HYPER212 COOLER BLUE RAY PLAYER Currently I am using a ASUS VE276Q but may upgrade to higher resolution I plan on using this for gaming. Some mmos but Arma 3 for sure, it's overkill for the specs, but Arma 1 and 2 were hell on systems with required specs. My current pc is ANTEC 1200 ASUS P5Q E8600 CORE 2 DUO WD6400AAKS 640 x2 in raid0 CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB x2 PC POWER COOLING SILENCER Mk II 950 ASUS EAH6950 w disabled shaders. Replaced a defective 4870 x2 that probably was doa but i nursed along till temps got so bad I had to rma it. Its a great card. As it stands the new system is around 2200 without tax. I know can probably cut back on the powersupply and maybe some other stuff but if this is a balanced system i can swing the extra. I'll just put off getting a new monitor for a while. I'd like this to last 6-8 years. I appreciate any input. Thanks

HI folks, been a while (2008) since I built my current pc with your input. (Overclockers guildence was invaluable, and much appreciated.) I think I need to start considering some options but want to start with the basics. I will be building with a budget of approximatly 2k and need to shave money where I can because I want to get close to cutting edge with the vid card and processor. I am looking at ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO, I74790K and G-SKILL TRIDENT X 16g Briefly, I looked at memory and downgraded from what the motherboard could handle because this was the biggest price drop. It also is far faster than what i have currently. I dont think it should be a problem. For the motherboard, I like the higher quality onboard sound and it has more than enough features to handle overclocking if I am ever inclined. The ASUS MAXIMUS VII FORMULA is nice but i dont think i need to spend that much more for a sound boost and wifi I probably wont use. The processor probably wont have to be overclocked for a long time, but since it was the bottleneck on my last build i figured I would go high end this time. I will switch to the build forum if I shouldnt have asked about new builds in this one. My current system is still viable so there is no rush. I have ASUS P5Q delux with a E8600 3.33 dual core that I never bothered to oc The only additions/replacements I have made since build is the vid card and added ram Thank you, pup

Hi guys, I had to RMA my eah 4870x2 and asus is offering me ASUS EAH6950/2DI2S/2GD5 as a replacement. It looks like a decent card but I believe it might be more of a midrange card where my old one was high end when I bought it. Should I wait for them to locate my same card or ask for a different possible swap? I have an antec 1200 so the size should be ok, have to measure, but the only rma swaps I have seen are the 5870s. which i followed the link in this thread too, and it shows that the performance of the 5870 and 4870x2 are similar Thanks

Hi again, I guess I got an "I told ya so" comin. I tried to buy gskill to suppliment my cosair memory, and now they are both out of stock and dont work together. Edit: Lol, now I see the cosair is gonna be back in stock in a week. My timing is impeccible. Please let me know if you think getting these to run together is possible. Thanks
-
Thanks, I'm leaning toward something with the same timing values, but most dont list a T value. If I'm reading the faqs correctly typical values are 3T or 2.5T. If I'm using memory with 5-5-5-15-2t, how important is it that I know the last value before purchase? Also will it matter if the voltages are different. I know I can change them in the bios, but I rather jeep everything at default till I need to overclock. One other thing, Im running an altec 650 w power supply, with the 4870x2 and other basic components Im wondering if adding ram will put me over the top on capacity, or if ram is a minimal power consumer? Thanks again.

Thanks guys, I'll look further into this in the morning. I would love to get the same that I already have, but I cant find them, or get 8 gig and just replace it all but cant afford it. I guess im mostly worried about mixing voltages and timings. Running a p5q deluxe in a 2 year old system I built with guidence mostly from these boards. Its a great system but vista 64 is eating up memory, along with all the memory leaks from some of the games (Warhammer) im running. I keep tabbing-out to find I have no memory free. I really wanted my next upgrade to be a monitor. Thanks again.

Hi guys, I got this 2 years ago and need to add another 4 gb of something as similar as possible. Am thinking about using this. If I could get some input before I buy it would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply Rokkaholik, I don't have an extra psu that would handle the system even stripped down. I noticed that the temps were a little high so I removed the heatsink and installed the stock one that came with the cpu. The pushpins on the xigmatek were just not holding up. I ordered the back plate for it and will reinstall when it gets here. I also adjusted the bracket on the video card and got it to seat a little better. The buzzing is gone, but still having some video problems. Star wars galaxies doesnt think i have current drivers but im using the latest (CCC 9.8.) On their site, swg doesnt mention anything about the 4000 ati cards so maybe the game doesnt support it. I had the game running with settings on full in an instance group. As the graphics got more intense I noticed lines on screen and edges becoming jagged. I alt tabbed to check coretemp and CCC temp. Cpu was fine but the vid card was 85c. It was still far from the red zone, and when i tabbed back into the game I had lost the video altogether. I got crysis to use as a test for the card and although it runs fine, I got the same diagonal wavy lines when the video card got hot in swg. Crysis warhead was fixed when I alt tabbed from full screen to windowed mode, and SWG was fixxed when I restarted and turned off shadows. I will keep an eye on the heat and do some long gaming sessions, but I think I may have a problem with the vid card. Thanks again

HI, Im back again I havent overclocked anything yet, but I have run into a little problem. I started getting static type buzzing noises through my speakers whenever I mouse over stuff on my browser, then I started getting some ticking and buzzing in some games. I tried reseating my video card, it's the only thing i have in a slot. Been checking forums but cant find anything that has been answered. One post discribed what I am having but there were no replies to it. The answers I have found range from reseating cards, to a dieing processor. I have all the latest drivers, am running vista 64bit os, and my system stats are a few posts up. I tried unpluging the speakers and using headphones. I loaded crysis and the screen went totally bonkers. I removed the screws to the video card and reseated it. I left the screws out and it loaded ok, although it still made interference noises (buzzing.) I think it might be the brackets arent letting it into the slot properly when i tighten the screws. Should i try bending the bracket a little for a better fit, I dont want to void the warentee. Thanks

Thanks for the help everyone, everything is running great, but still a bit worried about the push pins on the xigmatek cooler, when I was putting on the side panel of my Antec 1200 case the fan mount on it tapped the cooler and loosened it, I had to remove and reinstall it. It seems secure but still makes me nervious. Anyway, all stress tests ran fine with no errors. I still have to run 3dmark bench marks but that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again, repup

I dont know how I did it but i checked the jumper again, i was looking at the wrong one, somehow I had pulled the jumper off the chassis intrusion pins. (I guess even when you triple check stuff I can still screw up )I found the jumper nearby but also noticed the pins bent over. I replaced it and it didnt help, so I reset cmos and got no operating system message. I had to go back into bios and re assign RAID to the drives, thankfully it let me back in, but now Im worried I losened the pins. Guess I'll start hookin stuff up again tomorrow.

Spent all night gettin all the parts in the case, but now it halts because of chassis intrusion... guess I start takin stuff off, cant figure how to disable it.

Ok got memtest to work off of a floppy, first pass detected an error so I went into bios and checked the settings and they had been reset to auto. I may have reset defaults when I got a message saying overclock failed... I didnt overclock anything, but I had the option for default and i think i picked that one... anyway, I reset the ram and re-ran memtest and on the first 2 passes detected no errors. The one thing i didnt change was the voltage but the range seemed right at auto. /crossfingers Is there any reason i shouldnt enable memory remap on the northbridge? The only posts i have seen said it was messed up in Vista 64? I read (asus forum) that the secondary boot is an error protection measure when you disable express gate, which I did. I haven't found reference to it in the manual but ill keep looking while these tests run. They also stated that it only happens on a full powerdown reset, which I have been doin every time I change settings. A cmos reset also is said to clear up the reboot issue, though i havent tried that yet either. Not sure I want to clear it till after I test the memory again. The manual mentioned that you needed to have windows xp sp1 or higher installed before you can use hdd in sata2, I wonder if maybe that is why the dvd player wasn't being recognized even though it was seen in bios. That will be a problem when I install vista. However; I believe its just not seeing the cd as bootable, Ill cross that bridge when i get to it.

Hi Nate, The updated list I put in my other post is the one im using. There are two 4870x2 cards linked, I used the asus one. I think read somewhere on the asus boards with express gate can do the double boot thing. I have to reread up on it. I hope it isnt anything serious. I have been taking my time cuz this my first build, and following your guide (thanks for that, it's very helpful.) I can try to reburn the disk but its showing the file on this computer when I check the cd. It is finding the dvd player and its set up as first boot priority. I can look to see if there is another key to get into it tomorrow. Maybe i can set up a floppy boot disk or something. I gotta get up early tomorrow for work, but i doubt ill sleep much. Thanks, repup
