Haswell i7 (Final Check)

Update: Thanks everyone, I had ordered the parts.

My friend (PhD) wanted to buy a computer for her work.

(Because it is for work, she does not want any handicap or failure)

Purpose: Multimedia

Budget: 250,000 Yen (2541 USD)

(Hidden Purpose: An All-Round PC, even gaming, for her son)

Note that most parts are more expensive in Japan due to tax and shipping outside Japan. And Yen is so weak now...

If it's not for gaming what's it for? It looks like massive overkill for just media related tasks.

Video rendering? 3D creation? Photoshop?

My mistake for not stating the purpose clearly. It is for Video Rendering, Science 3D Stimulation.

Graphic Rendering and Physics Stimulation is the point here.

She has a son and she wants only one computer in the living room.

So the beast graphic card is a complement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CPU                          : Intel i7 4770 - 32770 Yen

CPU Cooler               : Corsair H100i - 12428 Yen

Motherboard             : Asus Z87-A - 18970 Yen

RAM                         :  Corsair 1600 8GHz x2 [DDR3 PC3-12800 8GB] - 13357 Yen

Graphic Card            : GIGABYTE 7970C [PCIExp 3GB] - 44426 Yen

HDD                          : Western Digital [4TB SATA600 7200] - 26798 Yen

Case                         : Zalman Z11 Plus Case - 5220 Yen

Case Fan                  : Zalman F4 - 1980 Yen

Monitor                      : GW2450HM  x 2 - 33020

Power Supply            : Super Flower 750W 80Plus Platinum -750P14PE - 12544 Yen

Extra                          : Asus Blu-Ray DD BW-12B1ST - 10000 Yen

Total : 211241 Yen (2244USD)

Just see if I miss anything and everything is compatible. before I order them.

A quality build, I think, without having to break the bank.

A blu-ray to burn discs. I am thinking of normal DVD optical drive though.

2 8GB RAM for now and upgrade later.

I choose 7960C because it is not for gaming cheaper and could upgrade for crossfire later.

I think the build is OKAY but if you think you have a better idea.

Please state the parts. (Example: I think changing XXX to XXX is much better choice)

:)

I would cut back on some things.

I take it that you are getting the non K version of the CPU because your friend will not be overclocking right? If so, then skip the Corsair cooler, and get a hyper 212 evo and a noctua fan. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608026

A lot of things on this build seems a bit off. Mind giving us a link to a japanese store?

Depends on the budget as well, you could build a cheaper system with lower spec's. I believe the PC would serve to last him a while as well without needing to upgrade for a couple years down the road. ~4-6 years is my estimate

I would keep the H100i,.. even if you are not buying the K chip, You will need all the cooling you can get.

Purpose: Multimedia

This includes Video Rendering, 3D Graphic Stimulation.

She is a PhD.

Another hidden purpose: Gaming

For her son.

Well... I personally do not think it is expensive though...

It is for work, not personal use.

I think the build is OKAY but if you think you have a better idea.

Well... in Japan, computers are extremely expensive and for the price of 200k Yen you could only get a higher mid-end laptop.

20 years of deflation and a few months of inflation, huh.

I would stay with Z77/Ivy Bridge Since it has been out long enough for reliability and proven performance. Unless there is/are feature(s) with Haswell that are required, I do not see an advantage except connectivity and bragging rights.

So far I have heard of no Haswell/Z87 complications, so I may be wrong.

Check the price difference.

A 550 watt power supply would be fine (actually a 450 would probably be good).

The price is almost the same for Ivy Bridge and Haswell.

Around $20 difference.

Yes around 550 watt is good.

But maybe adding another 7970 later.

Oh btw, there are no 600 Watt in Japan.

They only offers 550, 750 and 1000 in kakaku.com.

Unless you want to pay an overpriced shit from Yamada Denki (Japan Largest Electronics Retail Shop)

I would stick with the hardware you have listed, it will be a solid multipurpose rig. You can upgrade the PSU down the road if you decide to CrossFire.

And mom will enjoy the new features accompanying Haswell for her work, like TSX, AVX2, vPro, and VT-d.

The Haswell with twice the vector processing performance and a 10% increase in sequential cpu performance, (8 execution ports per core versus 6) will smoke the Ivy Bridge, when running code in parallel across multiple cores, or running complex applications that can take advantage of the new instruction sets.

well lucky for the op I usally say don't mix work and gaming computers but just get the best i7 like a 3930k and a ton of ram. the Haswell is fast but the 2011 socket is faster and those extra 2 cores really can make a difference in video rendering.

edit: also remeber gaming cards can't do 10-bit video so your limited to 16.7million. But since your focus is video work a gaming card will be alright but no point is spending extra on a adobe RGB monitor as you won't get the full benfit from it. Just make sure to buy a color corrector like i1 or colormonkey.
