  1. Try booting the laptop to a "live" OS such as Helix or Knoppix. Those OS's will recognize the USB external HD and you can transfer files that way.....
  2. Also, It need to have the same firmware version.....Check the manufacture dates and match the date and pcb (same make/model HD) as close as possible. I do digital forensics for a living using EnCase, FTK, Paraben, etc..... If I can be of any help, contact me....
  3. I do digital forensics for a living using EnCase, FTK, Paraben, etc..... To pay for a recovery due to hardware failure is very expensive. A Hardware failure may be overcome, by replacing the pcb/ logic board on the HD. You MUST have an identicla HD tho (same make/model/firmware version) I have recovered HD's from short circuits before and it's very easy....The hard hard part is matching the PCB/ circuit boards.
  4. I do digital forensics for a living using EnCase, FTK, Paraben, etc..... If the HD spins, and sounds ok, then you can buy an adapter to connect the HD via USB, just like an external drive. Boot the pc with Helix (www.e-fence.com) (free). Helix is a forensically sound boot disk that uses Linux, and it WILL NOT MOUNT the HD, therefore no writes will be made to it. You can then export the files to a separate HD, thumbdrive, etc. If it's a hardware failure of the HD, then.......Good Luck! To pay for a recovery due to hardware failure is very expensive. A Hardware failure may be overcome, by replacing the pcb/ logic board on the HD. You MUST have an identicla HD tho (same make/model/firmware version) if I can be of any help, let me know....GOOD LUCK
  5. AccessData offers FTK. The trial version on thier website is free but has a 5000 file limit for processing. I use the full version for forensics and criminal investigations, and it is very user friendly. www.accessdata.com
  6. I do digital forensics and am quite aware of issues involving unmatched MD5, SHA1 images and downloads. Yes, hardware can SOMETIMES be the culprit. For example, I attempted to image a drive with a foresicallysound disc via USB. After much testing and research I learned the problem was with the chipset that controls the USB. In my case, The chipset on the motherboard did no match the chipset on the device (external HD case) in which the image drive was located. Obvuosly, you need to correct the issue with your RAM. I would also diagnose any probles that may exist with your NIC card. If any of the data is being transferred via USB or firewire, then your problem may be as mine was. Hope it helps and good luck.
  7. The laptop you have most likely has a hard drive near failure. I have seen this, especially with the 40GB drives, if I remember correctly they were Seagate. The agency I work for ordered approx. 600 laptops 2-3 years ago and the majority ended up needing hard drive replacements in less than a year. Better back up your data before tragedy strikes......
  8. I just bought the AGP version of the X1950 Pro 512 MB from NewEgg. I had to get auto notified. Within 2 hours of the auto notify, I had ordered one and several hours later they were out of stock. I think they are limited in production and/ or high demand. I rushed and bought Rainbow Six-Vegas and tried to install it on a 3500 Winny and X850XT PE. The game would not run on the 850 and cpu. I had to order a new CPU (FX57) and the new 1950 Pro (>$600) just because I wanted to play the game .....Yeah, I know, I'm a retard. Well I needed the small upgrades anyway and I am not ready to go PCI-e yet. Any way, the performance of the 1950 Pro is outstanding. I can realy see a difference in the video VS. the 850XT PE. After checking and much research, IMO, the X1950 Pro 512 MB gpu is the AGP out there right now.
  9. There are many free applications available. I do digital forensics and some freeware sites are snapfiles.com and sourceforge.net. and opensourceforensics.org Hope it helps...
  10. I tested at 161. Although don't put too much weight into anyone's score. A persons emotional IQ, I believe, is much more relevant.
  11. Does anyone know where to buy a hard drive cage to put inside a tower case.
  12. On my first build I used a Gig of Corsair pc3200 XMS. It's been very reliable and have had no problems w/ it. I used 2 Gigs of OCZ recently and good god! What a difference. I was leary of buyinh OCZ at first, but most of the people here seem to really like it. I am really happy with the OCZ. It definitley out performs the Corsair. The relability has yet to be proven to me. It seems that OCZ rocks! I really don't think you could go wrong w/ either, but OCZ is a better choice for moderate and stable overclocking....
  13. LinkI watched our tech at work do this. Seems pretty simple, but easy to screw up. Check this out....I agree with paying such a high price. You can definitely do it. Just get/ borrow the correct tools. Good Luck!
  14. Well I just oredered the final parts (CPU, mobo, memory, etc. for this forensic build. I took Bigred's advice and went dual core. This is definitely a worstation type rig. After much reading here I see OCZ is very good quality memory. 2 Gigs should do for now. I'm going to use my old 9600XT 256 MB AGP since this is not a gaming rig. I decided to wait a couple months to upgrade the ps to an OCZ. I may post some pics of the rig inside and out after completion. Hopefully this rig will help solve some serious computer crimes-FAST! 1 Nero 7 Ultra Edition Software - Retail Item #: N82E16800996301 $120.00 Free w/ dual core AMD purchase Item(s) shipped from NJ 1 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4400CDBOX - Retail Item #: N82E16819103546 $497.00 1 Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM Item #: N82E16822144160 $161.00 1 ZALMAN CNPS7000B-AlCu LED 2 Ball Blue LED Light Cooling Fan/Heatsink - Retail Item #: N82E16835118118 $31.99 1 MSI K8N Neo2-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail Item #: N82E16813130514 $78.00 1 OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Platinum System Memory Model OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K - Retail Item #: N82E16820227210 $251.44 Item(s) shipped from TN Subtotal: $1,016.44 Tax: $0.00 Shipping: $43.15 Rush Order Fee: $2.99 Total: $1,062.58 Finshed rig: Above items plus, Maxtor 300 Gig SATA, 420 W Thermaltake ps, dual 5.25, 3.5 floppy, IDE external port, SATA external port, 2 removalble HDD trays, Firewire, USB front ports, HDD write blocker, and a few red lights .
