This week's poll deals with the Pay-To-Play subject, made popular by the first Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs).

Most of the Pay-To-Play games (though not necessarily MMORPGs anymore) range in fees from $10.00 USD to $20.00 USD a month, and may offer slight discounts for buying a larger chunk of time (e.g. 3 month, 6 month, or 1 year).

The number of Pay-To-Play games has substantially increased since the early days, with many additional titles coming soon.

So, we'd like to know. Have you ever, or do you plan to play a Pay-To-Play game?

i think it's retarded to pay to play a game (monthly). you've already given them probably $40-$50 for the game already, and i don't think you should have to pay them more!

Most Pay-To-Play games cannot be beat or finished. They usually offer a dynamic, ever changing world. Even to get to the highest level for one race/class usually takes a month or two for even the biggest powergamer.

Much like the origional donky kong or space invaders. There is no end.

I would pay $80 dollars for a MMORPG but I would NEVER pay a monthly fee to play it.

Perhaps if the game is free or VERY cheap to begin with (play for 5 months at 10 bucks a month, get bored of it, didnt cost more than a normal game), but I wont pay 50 bucks, then keep paying every month. Thats just retarted, IE: world of warcraft.

I could see the value if you were to spend a lot of time on the game. Most retailers give you some subscription time with the retail package anyway, from a month to a year. Seeing as how most games can only keep me occupied or entertained for a finite amount of time, I don't think I'll ever try a subscription based game.

I played during the early days of EQ when it was not as widely known(and fairly cheap charge compared to now)as it is now. I played off and on for about two years until I came to my senses. I do not agree with paying a monthly charge for a game that will only be popular for months, and if lucky, years to come. Once that game is discontinued, what happens to my investment? If EQ and all of its expansions were single player, it would have a massive fan base (compared to its current large fan base), IMO.

Pay-to-Play are by far worth the money.

On a normal game, you pay the cash for it, and get far less from it. A MMORPG you cannot beat. You have an endless amount of things you can do.

When you pay the 40$ you pay for the software and usage of the servers for a month. Maintaining servers is a difficult job, along with updates to improve the game. When you pay for an MMORPG, monthly, you aren't just tossing them more money. You're tossing them money for improvements.

Though, for many people, who rarely play games it is not worth it.

I pay way more for my satellite, cell phone and cable modem than I do for games. none of them provide any value once the subscription time runs out, why should games be any different?

At any one time I have from 1-4 subscription games going. Currently, I've let them all lapse except toontown online.. which incidentally is the only one you can't cancel w/o losing all of your characters permanently.
