F13Bubba Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Hey Y'all, I'm looking into building a new rig, and I'm deciding on graphics card. Basically, should I spend $75 on another GTX460, and run in SLI, or should I drop $280 on a GTX 680? I'm not too bothered about getting the best looking graphics EVAR, I just want to be able to run my games in 1080, with smooth frame rates for a decent price. Thoughts? El_Capitan Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Two GTX 460's is about the same as a GTX 580. If you're going to spend $280 on a GTX 680, I would recommend the extra $50 for a GTX 970, even with the 4GB VRAM issue, it'll probably locked down with drivers to use only 3.5GB. If you're buying used, a GTX 680 can be found for about $150 shipped, or a little more for a GTX 770 (which should still have warranty, and if it's Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI, they're serial-based warranty). Fight Game Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 another 460 will still only yield 1gb of useable vram. that's not good with todays games at all
SpikeSoprano Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I'd go with the 680, just because of more vram, or go with Capi's post and get the 970 which will future proof some of the newer games.
F13Bubba Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I guess there is also the possibility of joining the red team...
RedFury77 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 you can get a R9 290 for about $250, that'd be a way better option.
IVIYTH0S Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 you can get a R9 290 for about $250, that'd be a way better option. +1 a used 290X or 290 or even a new one would be worlds better than the 680 for the same or less money
VicVic Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I got R9 290 for sale!!
jdm_freek Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I purchased my msi 290 gaming from the egg for $220 after mir plus a pair of really nice headphones. The people who are (GREEN) with envy lol will tell you blah blah power consumption blah blah less efficient but at the end of the day it amounts to pennies a day at best. so my advice is buy the best card you can afford green or red. I could have purchased a gtx 970 but at the time it was $359 for thr 970 and it was $249 before mir and the performance difference was negligible and at 4k it was a no brainer
