The 290X is technically superior in terms of performance, but since i am an Nvidia fanboy, i would go for the gtx 970 :teehee:

Both perform very well on 1080P, so it doesn't really matter which one you would choose.

I think either is just preference at this point, their performance is pretty much on par with each other.

However, even though I have R9 290X's, and love their performance, they don't overclock so well. At stock, their voltage is already at ~1.22V's.

The GTX 970 is more efficient, and the MSI Gaming has the best power delivery so far that I've seen. It has 6+2 phases (Military Class 4), and after overclocking, will get better performance than a stock GTX 980. ASUS Strix GTX 970 has 6+1 phases (DIGI + VRM).

On a side note, for the GTX 980, the ASUS Strix oddly surpasses the MSI Gaming with 8+2 phases, while the MSI Gaming for the GTX 980 is still 6+2 phases.

oh and i only have an EVGA 600B PSU

isntt the 290x use alot of power?

You've got enough amps on your +12V rail.

R9 290X's really don't consume too much power, at least at stock voltages. I'm running two R9 290X's in Crossfire with an average overclocked 3570K on a Seasonic SS-660XP2.

Voltage readings from the wall. Prime 95 for the CPU tests, 3DMark Firestrike Extreme Combined Test for the CPU and Graphics cards.
i5-3570K stock idle with D5 pump, two R9 290X's in idle, and 7 fans = 110W
i5-3570K stock load with D5 pump, two R9 290X's in idle, and 7 fans = 142W

i5-3570K 4.4GHz @ 1.210V idle with D5 pump, two R9 290X's in idle, and 7 fans = 150W
i5-3570K 4.4GHz @ 1.210V load with D5 pump, two R9 290X's in idle, and 7 fans = 218W

i5-3570K 4.4GHz @ 1.210V load with D5 pump, two R9 290X's in load, and 7 fans = 592W

Card 1 went up to 1.219V and Card 2 went up to 1.227V.

You'd be cutting it close with two R9 290X's, but with one, you're good to go.
