Remember this thread???

Bwahahahahahahahahaha :woo:

2 weeks ago I was surfing around job sites looking for something better for my wife as she was doing her homework. She's in school (PLUS full time job) for Human Resources and business management type stuff. As I was looking, I went to Craigslist for my area and notices a car dealership was hiring in a town close by...

I clicked on it and one of the first lines said: "Are you tired of getting paid by the hour instead of how hard you work?"

It made me chuckle and I answered out loud, YES!

I re-read it and didn't chuckle that time because it hit me... I've ALWAYS been a hard worker with good work ethic. I'm always on time and the job has always been done right the first time or I redo it until it's done correctly. So... I kept reading and part of the ad said said they prefer someone with NO experience because they're easier to train, etc. Obviously no bad habits to try and UNteach someone for them. Further down it said their 2nd year sales guy just did 80k last year.

Needless to say, I called immediately. The guy said that they had JUST hired someone, but he wanted my resume to keep on file just in case the new guy didn't work out. Last week, I was surfing around again and found another dealership looking for a sales guy. This dealership does a LOT of business. I applied online and attached my resume. 10 minutes later my phone rang and the girl wanted to set up an interview for the following day (Friday).

I went in looking all nice and dapper (I HATE to dress up as I'm a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy). I met with a sales supervisor who was VERY nice. He went over my resume and asked a little about each job I've done. I stayed absolutely POSITIVE about every job even though some were really bad. I've worked everything from a casino, fast food, road construction, armed security, professional DJ, Music Store Asst. Manager, Quality Control and a few others... I guess I impressed him because he left the room and brought back the owner of the dealership. I sat and talked to him for about 10 minutes and I had him laughing and smiling the entire time. He liked the fact that I was a music nut so we were throwing trivia back and forth. He then told me he was 90% sure he'd be calling me tomorrow (Sat) and he did... Another Interview set up for Monday with the Sales Manager.

After work on Monday, I scurried home to clean up and get all dapper again and get to the interview. This guy was a little harder to crack, but still nice. He did the "sell me this pen" routine. Sadly, I had already googled all the interview tricks for car sales at a dealership, so I was prepared.... kinda. I did OK he said, but he can work with that. He then asked me the typical questions of where I want to be in 5 years, and about my work ethic and if I'm trainable and can take direction and criticism, etc... Last question basically asked that he had 4-5 other qualified people, why should he choose me? Answer... "Because I'm hungry and you have a buffet!" (I think I surprised him, but he kinda snickered)

Congratulations... the job is yours if you want it!

So... Next was to figure out a 2 week notice for MY job.

Even though I've been pretty pissed off as of late, I'm not a bridge burner. Since it is basically a factory type setting, I didn't see the need to type some long drawn out notice. The supervisor came in Tuesday morning and I walked to his office and said I have to give a 2 week notice. He looked blankly at me for a second and his jaw dropped. He put his head on the desk. Apparently, one of the other guys that has been there 3 years just gave a 2 day notice the day before... lol. BOTH of our jobs are time consuming to train people on. Immediately the negotiations began as he offered a raise and some extra vacation time... lol. I told him NO, I wasn't passing up a job that the base pay was more a month than I made here with sales bonuses on top of that. I told him to get someone quick and I'd train them full bore until my last day. He went on and on saying I was his "Go-To" guy on my end and he relies on me, etc... I kinda smiled and asked him "Don't you wish you would have let me train someone in for my job like I've been asking you for the last year?

Two more times that day he came out and asked if there was something he could do to make me stay.... Even one of the owners came out to ask me to stay. He loves the fact that he can rely on me and I've been a solid performer for a year now with ZERO non-conformances. He also said the door is WIDE OPEN if I ever need to come back and he'd make it worth my while. That made me feel good, I must say. Too bad he knows NOTHING about the problems out on the floor with certain people, but I wish he did.

To NOT burn bridges, I kept quiet about all the things going wrong at the place.

1) Lazy supervisor who does everything the quick way and does as little as possible. He works harder at getting out of work than he would if he just did the job. He's a short Philipino guy who wears nothing but Eagle and A&F stuff so he doesn't want to get dirty.

2) A lead that spends most of her day hiding and on her phone on Facebook. She posts stuff all day long and the TIMES are recorded on the posts and the supervisor even answered many of them (they're friends). When I reported it one day, he denied it and said she uses her phone for work purposes. I showed him one of the posts, the time it was made (it wasn't break time either) and also his response to her. He said the internet time must be off. Oddly enough the post was deleted a few minutes later. I saw him on break at lunch and told him "you didn't think I was smart enough to take a screen shot of her post and the TIMES and your response before she deleted it? I got a concearned stare from him on that. This lead also manages to need a bathroom break 10 minutes before each break and comes out 2 monutes before break actually starts, so she heads straight out for her cigarette. She'll also come back 5-10 minutes late. We're done with work at 3:30pm. My area was done cleaning up at 3:28 one day so we were heading towards the bathroom to wash up. She intercepted us on her way OUT of the bathroom and tried to scold us for not working up to 3:30... I politely informed her that she was in the bathroom cleaning up 5 minuted before we were, so if she really wanted to press the issue, we could go talk to the owner about it... She dropped the issue. lol

3) A busy-body "C U Next Tuesday" (Mary) who spends most of her day running around spying on people so she can twist the story and tattle on people to the supervisor. She's another one that has ridiculous ways of doing things that cause MANY non-conformance issues with our products. Non-Conformance = not up to par or has errors. She'll get twice as much done as you, but half of her stuff has issues...They get swept under the rug though... She's a manipulative beyotch to say the least and always has ulterior motives. Have you ever heard the saying "even a blind squirrel finds a nut one in a while"? It fits her to a TEE! She knows a LITTLE about each job, but not the entire job. She WINGS everything she does. When there's an issue of some kind, she'll make guess after guess after guess after guess saying she's RIGHT all while being wrong, And then finally it'll be right and she's say "SEE!?!?!? I WAS RIGHT! I TOLD YOU!" (nevermind all the times she was wrong before that). The supervisor just can't tell her NO for some reason. He's nothing more than a puppet and she pulls his strings all the time. He'll listen to her no matter how much common sense you throw at him. She plays him well.

Today, almost everyone at the place knows I gave a 2 week notice. Many of the good hard workers stopped by to say hello and sorry to see me go, etc...

They also just found out that a 3rd guy in my area is quitting within 2 weeks as well for many of the same reasons I am. On top of that, their summer help college kids will be leaving in less than 2 weeks..... ouch

Mary came out 3 different times today to stick her nose into our business (she doesn't even work in our area) as well as tell me how I need to train the next guy on this or that. I decided NOT to play nice with her and I let her have it. She stormed out pissed off. I took what little training I got when I started ( I was literally thrown into my job) and streamlined the job making it more efficient by 10 minutes per machine built without cutting corners. She still thinks my way is the wrong way (She's ALWAYS right).

So they had both yesterday and today to get a trainee for me and nothing. Then I was told a guy down in the other building knows how to weld and braze, so he's a shoe-in for the job. I told them to get him down here so I can get him up to speed on the mechanical stuff. They said possibly next Tuesday or Wednesday I can train him. I cornered the supervisor once again and asked him how the HELL he seems to think I can train someone up to my speed in one friggin day all the time. The last 3 people I tried to show my job to were left confused. It's going to take at LEAST 2 weeks of HANDS-ON, ALL DAY training to get to speed as well as figure out the timing of each thing. 20 minutes later, the supervisor was down at the end of the hall after I told Mary off again talking to her and she was pointing down towards me. He came out about 5 minutes later and asked me nicely if I could possibly type out a list of each thing I do in the morning when I start. I told him NO, I'll just show the trainee when they bring him over to me. The supervisor beat around the bush a little and I finally told him I saw him talking to Mary and I know she has problems with me. If he's going to have Mary train the new guy, then today will be my last day and they can worry about him without me. He back-pedaled rather quickly. I'm still not typing out my job proceedures. Have Mary do it since she knows the job so much better than me...

Anyway.... YAY ME! On to bigger and better things

It's too bad about the issues because the 4 owners are fantastic people. VERY nice and easy to work for. If they were a little more "hands-on", I think they'd see how ineffective the lead and supervisor are and how much better off they'd be with new people in their place. I do wish the place well. There are MANY good people there. Just a few turds in the punch bowl...

ccokeman... There are 2 people there I can't stand and It doesn't bother me in the slightest if I never see them again. Mary and a one-upping, chest puffing loudmouth volume to 15 meathead named Jake.

The lead used to be a friend of mine until we worked together (we still get along, but not like we used to), I still think she's a nice person, but a very poor lead. The supervisor is a nice guy, he's just very bad at his job. He tries too hard to be a "friend" to people that need a clear cut SUPERVISOR to keep them in line.

Man. My dad tells me these exact same stories, he has a whole collection. He can do mechanical engineering, but now he mostly does data management.

Incompetent co-workers, supervisors who are less knowledgeable than the incompetent employees. He once quit because of a "mary" character. That was a tough year.
Seems to me you will find these people everywhere and anywhere you go... Argh....

I would assume being a car salesman would be quite a volatile job, gotta be quick on your feet. Best of luck! Let us know how it goes.
