Hi I got given this old PC tower for free that I modded two dvd roms from upright to down position so the PC will be used side-way instead of upright. 
Anyway I added cheap neon light that I had lying around for 4 yrs or so. I also added a biggish fan on the side panel to draw out the heat from CPU. The CPU  fan was missing so I made a fan that sits on top of the CPU heatstink til I find a proper one. 
The OS is XP with hacked vista on top of it which was abit strange for me to use and still getting used to this. This old PC is mainly to use for to play old games.

The motherboard is intel desktop.

The graphic card that came with this old PC is Nvidia GF8400GS 512M DDR2 DVI HDMI. I think this card is dead cos the PC wont booted til I remove this card then the pc will boot.

Unfortunately I cant play old games on it . I'm thinking of buying a cheap replacement graphic card for this PC . Do you think this card will work on my old PC motherboard? I don't wanna waste my $29 if it doesn't.

I still have a high end gaming PC here mainly to surf the net and so on.

oh does anyone know where or how to get XP service pack 2 and 3 ?  i know microsoft stop these packs but i kinda need them for my xp so i can update it. or keep it on cd for future format........

Are you sure the card was dead when you got it? Did you plug your monitor into the card the first time you tried booting?

 

If you can get another 8400gs or better, you should be able to do some light gaming. My first REAL pc was a Dell with an 8300GS in it and I could run TF2 pretty comfortably...then again that was before there were so many hats.

yep  tried that too.  the mini fan on the card spins thou... just wondered why the pc booted as in blank screen on either motherboard or the card til i removed the graphic card ...  then i can see the screen while its booting .....

I may have a card for you, will just need to find it is all haha 5xxx or 6xxx series radeon, I think. Low to mid end, not sure what it is exactly though.

 

However you're in qld right?

Well if i find it tomorrow i'll let you know what it is and you can decide if you want it shipped haha oh and also mwave also has a $29 gtx 210 so shipping and/or pick up may make it cheaper if you buy new.

 

Tried the 8400 in a different rig yet to confirm that it is dead? As well as switching the other way and putting a known working card into the new "old pc".

From personal experience, the GT210 is about as weak a gamer as the 8400GS.... but really why even sink any money in that... backup machine (I'll be nice ) lol
