Ive owned a few of these cordless rumblepad 2s
I do like them very much but they always break in the same spot
inside underneath the button are these little rubber gel pads that are used to 'click' the buttons
and they always wear out about after a year or two of use
does anyone know if they sell these parts anywhere? I checked the logitech website and it says parts not available

or is there a good relatively cheap newer PS2 style pad?
I know my old controller only supports one type on input, not the x-input or whatever newer controllers use

Those are membrane switches from the sounds of your description
Its like a tiny dome that when collapsed makes an electrical current for the controller to pick up
They are everywhere and used in keyboards quite extensively. The only problem is that they
all have a different 'Feel' to them, most are built into a circuitboard aswell so unless you find an entire
rumblepad circuitboard then you are just better off buying a few in bulk on ebay

A good cleaning and a dab of conductive paint on the dome will fix it.
