 Converting NTFS to FAT32

I want to convert my external Hitatchi 500gb hd into Fat32 so I can store movies etc on it and hook it to my xbox 360.

how do i convert from NTFS to FAT32

You will need to format, you can't convert from a file system to another

  • Open up the command prompt
  • type in: format /FS:FAT32 "drive letter"

This will completely wipe everything on it and format it as fat32.

Oh yeah, that is for Windows XP, I'm not sure if it works the same in Win7.

Alternatively (again not sure about Win7) right clicking on the drive in my computer, clicking on format, selecting FAT32 and hitting "START" should work as well.
I've always liked the command prompt way for a lot of things better.

ya i know i have to format,,,i'll try these suggestions.

I already right clicked "computer" and went to "manage" but was unable to format to FAT32

I'll give ur suggestions a shot and let you know

ok just went to mycomputer,,, right clicked on the HD and selected format,,, but it only seems to give me the NTFS option??????????

I assume you're formatting something to be windows/mac/linux compatible. That'd be the only logical explanation for what you're doing tongue.gif
