Hi there,
My plan is to have a hard drive in my pc that I can turn on and off with an external switch that I will mount onto the computer case. I just ordered some molex to sata adapters that I will be able to butcher in the process. I need to know if I am going to need a 4 pole switch or can I just somehow wire a 2 pole switch to it? Also will it be safe to power on and off this HD while the computer is running? Thanks -------------------- So what you're saying is that you read the title, ignored the OP's post, made a quick and reckless post, which by itself shows that you failed to do something as basic as reading the first post in the thread, and then got caught. Well done :thumbs-up: ____________________________ Case: Antec 300 CPU: Phenom II 940 MB: GIG MA790X GPU: (X2) XFX 4870 1gb Screen: (X2) Acer 23" 1920x1080 Ram: 2x2 Corsair Dom1066 PS: Corsair TX 750W Win 7 64bit HDD: 640GB WD 2x1TB For Media + Backup |

Also will it be safe to power on and off this HD while the computer is running? No. Possible data corruption on SATA, possible BSOD on ATA. No. Possible data corruption on SATA, possible BSOD on ATA. Power saving: 1 min idle or Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > remove drive letter This!!! Unless your drives support hot-plug and you have it enabled (which hurts performance) you CANNOT remove the power when the computer is running. -------------------- Desktop: | Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz | 128 GB GSkill Falcon | 8 GB WinTec AmpX | Sapphire 4870 X2 | DFI P35-T2RL | PCP&C Silencer 610 | W7 x64 | HTPC: | X3 720 BE @ 3.4 GHz | 4.5 TB Storage | 8 GB GeIL Black Dragon | PowerColor 4830 | ECS A-780GM-A | ATI Theater 650 Pro | OCZ Fatal1ty 550 | W7 x64 | Router/VPN/Compiling: | Opteron 175 | 4 GB DDR 500 | S3 Trio PCI VGA | Asus A8N-SLI SE | SinTek 500SLI | XP Pro | Office: | Dell Precision 390 | Core 2 Duo E6320 | 2 GB DDR2 667 | XFX 7800GT | Fedora 10 / Windows 7 RC | NetBook: | Asus EeePC 900A | 1.6 GHz Atom | 32 GB SSD | 2 GB DDR2 667 | Intel Integrated | W7 x86 | |

can I use a 2 pole switch or do I need to find a fancy 4 pole one? -------------------- So what you're saying is that you read the title, ignored the OP's post, made a quick and reckless post, which by itself shows that you failed to do something as basic as reading the first post in the thread, and then got caught. No PATA drive supports it and only SATA-IO drives support hot-swap. I still occasionally "hot" plug IDE drives into my computer (since alot of people still use that horrible tech) and I've never had any problems. I have an IDE drive myself that I plug in occasionally to back up stuff (even though I have a 500GB dedicated to that in an USB enclosure.) Maybe since it isn't that often I haven't had the problems? -------------------- Mobo: Gigabyte EP45 EXTREME | Processor: Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 4ghz 24/hr stable!

IVY, you are just lucky, as am I.
I Have been hot swapping IDE for years with nil issues to date. And of course SATA is known to be better for this - once again, i haven't had a problem.... -------------------- |
